“Hets” (Sweeden, 1944) – Alf Sjoberg, Screenplay by Ingmar Bergman, 1st FESTIVAL DE CANNES -1946, World cinema classics
The film “Hets” marks Ingmar Bergman's debut in cinema as a screenwriter. It's a psychological drama based on the conflict between Jan-Erik Widgren, a student in the graduating class of an elite school, and his Latin teacher nicknamed Caligula. Actor Stig Jarrel (Caligula) brilliantly portrays the image of a charming maniac, suffering from loneliness, who derives immense pleasure from oppressing the weak, ultimately driving the vulnerable tobacco shop assistant Berta Olsen to suicide. In school, one of Caligula's victims is Jan-Erik Widgren, a prominent figure in the class and a potential future leader, who, due to the persecution, fails to obtain the coveted diploma.
