I Took These Kids Offshore… They Weren’t Ready For THIS!
One of the greatest things about moving to Florida and Fishing full-time is that my buddies that I worked with at Tulsa Fire Department come to visit me with their families. There is nothing better than taking a kid offshore for the first time and watching him catch his first saltwater fish. I had the privilege to take Cody and Paige and their four kids offshore for the day and everybody caught fish, and some of them caught the fish of their lifetime.

A group of children and guests from Oklahoma join a charter trip on the \"Lawless Ride\" to fish the reefs. Under the guidance of Captain Brock, the beginners learn saltwater fishing techniques and successfully catch a variety of species, culminating in the capture of a massive mangrove snapper.
Taking a boatload of kids offshore sounded like a great idea until the rods started bending.
One fish turned into another then everybody started getting in on it.
But before this trip was over one of them was about to get something none of us expected.
Good morning guys we are out on the lawless ride again today.
Got some special guests from Oklahoma.
Cody Gilmore.
All right this is their first trip we're going to go out
hit some reefs catch some big fish see if they can handle it.
Look at these.
Hello Laurie that's your lunch.
Are you hungry?
Try one.
Say if you're allergic to squid.
All right Brock's going to show you how all this works.
We brought the big rod for you Cody if we get into some big grouper.
So we can watch you get your butt kicked.
So we started out simple with some cut squid and some cut bait.
Hey Cody I'm going to show you here.
Baiting them like go through once and then go back in and then go through again so it's double hooked.
You have you bass fished before?
All right you know how you set the hook when you bass fish?
Yeah.
Don't do that here.
Just hold it tight and the fish will set that these are circle hooks.
So when the fish starts to swim away the hook turns and just catches in the corner of its mouth.
If you jerk like set the hook it just pulls it straight out of the mouth.
Gotcha.
Vivian's on look at her go.
Keep reeling keep reeling.
Yeah like a gun exactly.
Oh it's a good one.
Look at that.
You got a squirrel or no that's a bank sea bass.
Grab that rod you come over here.
I got a bigger rod for you big boy.
Did you feel a bite?
And uh if you do you can hold it like grip hold it with that hand.
There you go.
Kind of gives you a little more leverage not as hard.
Lewis all right come here.
Tuck that under your arm hold it right there.
And I'll help you you get a bite.
If it starts pulling you tell me and I'll help you.
Got more bait.
Oh nice nice bait.
There you go swing it over.
So we were saving these baits like the grunts and the squirrel fish for Cody to use later.
Look at that.
There you go that's a little bit better.
Hold on hold on when you when you hear it go real real slower.
There you go now real there you go.
And what are you doing there?
It was just pulling drag out.
There you go let me tighten that drag up.
All right now go pull up.
Now reel down.
Pull up.
I don't know what he's got Brock.
Yeah.
There you go.
Trigger.
Don't hold it don't pull them out of the water.
And then just kind of slink.
All right next time leave his head in the water.
Yeah.
And then I'll get the net and we'll nab them.
That's all right.
Well I'll put it right here.
Okay.
Did you see how I hooked these squid?
Watch I'll show you.
So you can start hooking yours.
You go through it one time and then you swing it around.
And then you go through it again.
So it's double hook.
There you go.
Any more bait Nolan?
Let's try a piece of sardine.
Here you go.
There you go.
Perfect.
Oh boy.
Hand me that net.
There we go.
It's okay.
We got it.
There you go.
Keep pumping.
Now crank crank crank.
Holy moly.
Get that in.
Get the fish out.
And I'm gonna net his.
All right good.
Good job.
You're doing good.
Just don't let your line go slack.
You got it.
You're fine.
Yep.
I think there's a goliath down there.
I saw something big.
It didn't look like a shark.
Ah red snapper is not in season but that's still a cool catch.
Yep.
I'm getting this for him to hold them.
Come here Cody.
There you go.
All right.
Not bad.
Way better than a catfish.
There you go.
All right.
You want to let you.
Oh you want to get a pic?
She wants to get a pic.
Here let me show you something.
Hold it like this.
Hold it out in front of you.
There you go.
Turn him a little.
Right there.
All right bud.
Let's get you down there.
You can just open the bail.
Open that.
You open the handles.
Hold on to it good.
There you go.
Let's just pile the bait on.
Let's make a little buffet.
There you go.
Did it break?
Back at the fire department when I worked with Cody.
We would call that the Cody factor.
Just don't reel too fast.
So Brock saw some huge mangrove swim up with that last snapper.
So he cut up some bait.
Chummed it up.
Threw a bait out.
Hooked up and gave the rod to Cody.
Oh my lord.
Oh my god.
Cody doesn't even realize how awesome that is.
Oh my god.
Hey Cody that's the biggest mangrove I've ever seen in person.
That's what followed us.
Oh my lord.
So Brock runs his own charter service out of Panama City Beach.
Pompano Brock Charters.
And if you're in the area he is who I would recommend to go with.
Good job Brock.
Here you can let go of the hook.
I'll swing it out of the way.
Okay.
Golly Cody.
What do you think that weighs?
15?
10?
You can touch them.
The fins the fins are sharp but you can go like that and feel them.
That's a fat mangrove.
So the kids were having a blast with the double drop rigs.
So we just kept at it and let them keep catching.
You ready Rhett?
Come on Rhett.
Not real.
Fish on Rhett.
Pull up.
Drill down.
It's not real.
There you go.
Come on Rhett.
You got it.
For a kid that had only freshwater fished before,
Rhett picked everything up so fast and immediately was ahead of his dad.
A little bit short.
You want a picture?
Grab it like that and then you can just flip them off.
He's gone.
First grouper.
I just put a little tip it'll like 50 pounds later for the chumming.
Yeah.
You're on.
Start reeling.
Start reeling Rhett.
There you go buddy.
Try not to let when you're lifting.
Start reeling before you drop the rod tip.
Go ahead and reel up.
We'll check your baits.
There you go.
Don't let it go slack.
There you go.
Like go up there a little ways to drop it.
Red snapper.
That's a nice one man.
There you go.
Now when he gets fish, you just open that up a little bit.
Look at that.
You want a picture?
I'll hold him by the line right here.
There you go.
Heard Vivian tell Nolan to smile.
As soon as Vivian got on board, she was in charge of everything.
Oh vermilion.
Here, he'll fin you.
Yeah, he'll hurt your hands.
All these fish can bite and look.
See those bones?
If they go in your hand, it'll make it really swell up and get in.
All right, swing her over here.
Yeah.
Yep.
Yeah, I think it's a grunt.
Another good bait right now.
All right, don't reel up anymore and just swing them over here to me.
Lift him up.
Look how red the inside of his mouth is.
So Louie finally woke up from his nap.
All right, Louis, you want to help?
Open that lid.
Pull that latch up.
Pull up.
Use your muscles.
Ready?
Now he's home.
Yeah, this one gets ate.
It's going to be a good one.
Yep.
Yep, might be another vermilion snapper.
Nope, another big grunt.
There you go.
Oh, that's a big grouper bait there.
My bait got annihilated.
I'll take that one.
Dang.
Get ready, Nolan.
Nolan.
Okay, crank fast, fast, fast, fast.
There you go.
Keep going.
All right.
You're good.
He might make it.
No, short.
Dang it.
Good job though, Nolan.
Want a picture with him?
You can throw the hook over.
He's going to say, I can swap out with you and I can start baiting.
Something's messing with it.
Hey, Vivian, go scoop those two vermilion snapper up in the net.
You're okay.
That's a good one.
Okay, keep cranking.
You don't have to go super fast.
Hold on.
All right, now go.
Now go fast.
Did he come off?
Hold on.
Yep, he came off.
Hold on.
I think we're stuck.
Yep, we're hung.
Give it a second.
See if there's a fish on there.
Well, it felt like I'd initially hooked something and it swam into the rocks and was rocked up.
So I gave it a little bit of time to see if he'd come loose and come out.
And it did.
But when we got it up to the top, it was not what I was expecting at all.
I think I got a piece of coral.
Oh, good.
Well, maybe it's a fish.
Oh, kids, check this out.
I'm going to open the bail for you.
Come here.
I got pliers right there if you want.
We're going to drop this sucker hole, Cody.
Look.
Yep.
What do we got going over here?
Keep going.
Oh, you got a big grunt.
Yeah, I did.
Good job, Louie.
Look at the colors on that grunt.
I've never seen them striped like that.
It's because I'm good at what I was picky.
You're the master catching small fish.
That might be a keeper.
We need two, don't you?
Yeah, well, he got tangled in mine, but it ain't a big deal.
Yeah, that's a keeper trigger.
Pull him up more.
Real, real, real.
Pull him up more.
Good job, bud.
Nice.
It's not too bad, is it?
You need pliers?
Yeah, those triggers will swim around when they eat it.
Oh, hey, I was going to show you guys why they call them a trigger fish.
All right, you see this right there?
Try and push that down.
Don't use the tip.
Just try and push it down.
Can't, can you?
Now, see that little one?
Push that little one down.
All right, Brock's getting ready to hook up on a good one.
Get ready, Nolan.
Nolan.
Oh, Lewis hasn't seen the vampire tooth yet.
Let him get it up off the bottom.
No, it's still real.
Come on, Nolan.
Real, bud.
Come on, Nolan.
This one's real.
Come on, Nolan.
There you go.
This is bigger than the last one.
Keep reeling.
Where do you want us to put this?
Nolan's got a good one.
There you go.
Watch him.
Come on, Nolan.
Nice.
That's going to be close.
We'll measure him.
He still got it?
Not the smartest fish in the sea.
Oh, yeah.
Won't miss as many sets.
You're right.
Oh, yeah.
He's over 20.
Sweet.
There it is.
Nolan, go, go, go, go.
Catch you another one, Nolan.
I'm eating.
All right.
Your hooks are ready, Rhett, when you're done eating.
Another red.
That might be a keeper, too.
All right.
Come on, Louie.
Crank.
You're getting it.
You're doing good.
There you go.
Oh, he got a double.
Look at that.
Oh, Lewis.
Good job, man.
Where are you going?
You're good.
Big boy with a little fish.
That might make it.
Good job, Cody.
All right.
If nothing happens here quick, we're just heading in, guys.
So we'll give it one shot.
These boys get a little bit older, Cody.
You have to come down where we can go take a long trip out.
Go like 30, 40 miles out and get like.
One of them's already hit me up.
You know, we could just drive like quick and not stop and drive the whole way.
