Garden Tour of a Charming 18th-Century Home in Wiltshire | Garden Tour

Welcome to our garden. We changed this quite a lot, this was all hard paved and we wanted to give it a sort of more Mediterranean feel, so we put the gravel down. This was covered in grey slate so it looked rather dark, so we put these lovely more sort of European Mediterranean tiles in and this fountain we put in which is a copy of a 16th century Venetian dolphin and then up here we have our seating area, this is where we sort of hang out and I've got my Moorish tables here which is a new collection of furniture I've just designed. So this is where we come and hang out and sit in the sun and we've also got our barbecue here, so yeah this is where we do most of our entertaining and as you can see on this beautiful very hot afternoon this gets all the sun. So this part of the garden used to be very very much darker, the previous owners had planted pretty much the whole thing with box topiary, you couldn't actually even see these little pretty cobbles on the floor, so we opened it right up and just planted, I mean as is obvious we just love purple white and green with a bit of pink which I actually love it. Lots of purple. Yeah lots of purple but and then the idea which is your idea was a gravel garden as you can see so we've got plants in here which hopefully are going to be quite drought resistant. We have lots of our lovely pot collection out here as well which you can see and we have other sort of a stone decoration like this which came from Sarah's father's house here and our lovely copper here. We found this in an old reclamation yard in Dorset. We did. Yeah. And I really love the blue, this is Leo's idea to have the blue painted plant supports and the blue painted furniture, the chairs. The chairs are. John Stephanides is one of your heroes. Yeah John Stephanides is one of my heroes and that's very much taken from an idea that he had so yeah I have him to thank for those lovely chairs and we planted these multi-stemmed trees and got lights underneath them with a box hedge around them. And later on in summer all the lavender comes out it's really beautiful and it's purple it is full of bees it's just a really special place it's lovely. This is such a pretty rose it smells delicious it's wilting slightly in this heat sadly I don't think the roses are used to this kind of temperature in May but it's absolutely lovely. This is a Gertrude Jekyll in the corner again beautiful very very fragrant it's delicious. And we put these lovely balls on the finials on top of the wall here. And walking down into the sort of lollipop garden. The lollipop garden and we've got lots of topiary, there's beech hedging here which got cut into shapes above it and this creates different compartments inside this this garden and as you can see this is lovely and cool with all the shade from from the trees. And this leads down to our guest studio. Much of this was the same because as you can see all of this is well established so we didn't change it very much of this at all. We've changed this a lot but we didn't change this so this was much more overgrown much higher box hedging here which we took out and opened it all out more. We took out lots of trees it was very very dark and shaded with the trees and then we have the lovely yew topiary behind you it's another little compartment and this is where the previous owners had their chickens which I still long for and which I'd put my little chicken hut here if I could. So this beautiful box cloud hedging outside the front of the house which is great. I love the shapes of it it's so organic and beautiful and it just encloses this little courtyard garden here perfectly. When we bought the house this was all paved and it had grass but the grass didn't look great so we changed the grass to gravel which is just has a much nicer look. It makes the house look more finished and then we just planted up again more purple more pink more green and it's just a really nice approach to the house and there's always something going on in this garden so every time of year when you walk through here to the front door it's just you know great fun and always something to look at.
