Why would anyone choose to build where the land itself seems determined to resist them? Ancient settlements and monuments appear on isolated cliffs, exposed plateaus, steep mountainsides, barren islands, and remote landscapes where reaching the site could be difficult even before construction began. Stone, timber, food, and water had to be carried through terrain that offered little room for error, while builders still needed to create foundations strong enough to survive wind, erosion, earthquakes, or extreme changes in temperature.
