AI GeneratedThe creator transforms a budget-friendly Ikea dresser into a high-end storage piece for a homeschool and craft room. By using peel-and-stick grass cloth wallpaper and custom CNC-carved accents, the project demonstrates how to achieve a luxury look on a tight budget while repurposing old furniture.
Two kids, one homeschool room, six pets,
and a dresser that costs 40 bucks from Ikea.
I have so many supplies, craft supplies, school supplies.
I really need some sort of creative storage
that looks nice and doesn't look like a freebie
that I found off Facebook Marketplace.
So I'm gonna tackle this Ikea hack
and I'm gonna show you how fun you can make this
using a cheap piece of furniture.
We're gonna give it extra life and save it from the landfill
because that's what we do around here, so stay tuned.
Well, I'm hoping today I can make this
look like a $500 piece of furniture.
And the thing I'm gonna do with this
is actually pretty unique.
I don't think I've seen anybody do this before on a dresser.
But the first thing I need to do here
is to get this all taken apart
and it needs a really good clean.
Now, I picked these up on Facebook Marketplace
and I have two of them, so it was two for 40 bucks
was the deal, so not bad.
But I only need one of them in our homeschool room,
so I'm gonna make over this one first
because storage is getting to be a problem.
I'm gonna get all these knobs taken off.
I'm definitely not gonna use these on this project,
but they're not terrible, so I'll probably save these.
It's time to get these really clean.
I like to use simple green on my projects.
I see that it gets rid of a lot of dirt and grime,
fingerprints, old furniture polish, stuff like that.
These have definitely been sitting in a garage
or something for a while.
They are really dirty, so I'm gonna let the simple green
do its work for a minute and then we'll wipe it back.
You could probably see all that chipped paint on this one,
so I need to make that a little more smooth
for our next step to adhere really nicely.
So I'm gonna go in with my three by four surf prep sander
and 120 grit sandpaper.
Probably need more like a 180, but I don't have it on hand,
so we're gonna use what we have today
and get this thing smoothed out a little bit.
I need to do a really good job
of getting all of this dust off of here from sanding,
and it's also kind of knocking off any last pieces of paint
that are hanging on for dear life here,
because if I don't get this, all of the dust off,
our next part is never gonna stick.
So I'll do a really good job going over this a few times
with just a regular rag, and then I'll probably use
a damp rag on the next round.
Okay, so I got today's design idea from Courtney
over at Steel Birch Designs on Instagram,
and she does this really awesome painting technique
that makes it look like grass cloth on furniture.
But for an Ikea hack like this,
I'm not gonna go all in on that technique.
So I found some really great grass cloth peel and stick
off of Amazon, and I'm gonna try my best
to recreate that signature look of hers the easy way.
Since this is just for my homeschool slash craft room,
I thought this would be perfect.
And we'll take this hack to the next level
and try to do it on a budget.
I think it's gonna look pretty cool.
First, I need to get it moved inside
because it is still 107 degrees in my garage,
and I do not feel like working in that today.
So let's drag this to the homeschool room.
Hey, real quick, if you're here because you wanna pay off
something like a credit card, a car loan,
or that one loan that you just don't wanna talk about,
well, guess what?
This whole channel started out with this premise,
and every piece of furniture ended up
as somebody's trash that we turned
into a way to pay off debt.
So if you like that type of content,

So I would love to have you stick around.
Thanks.
Okay, now it's time for me to do the thing
that I have been dreading for months,
and I can't even believe I'm about to show you guys
what this looks like in my house because it's a mess.
But it is time to get this homeschool room clean
so I have a place for this piece of furniture to go
when I finish it.
Now, I am completely overwhelmed just looking around in here,
but truthfully, when it is the last day of school
and we are finished, I throw everything in this room
and close the door until the next school year.
So it is time.
I'm only two weeks away from school starting again for us,
so I've got to get this room tidied up.
This particularly messy spot right here,
I've always wanted to turn into my craft station,
and I think today is gonna be the day
that I actually get to use this for crafting this year.
So I've ordered the knobs from Amazon,
and while I wait for them to show up,
I'm gonna add just a little something extra special on here.
So I have a Makira Z1.
It's a CNC machine.
This video is not sponsored by them.
I have this, and I have the ability
to create custom photos of our pets,
who, if you've watched this channel long enough,
you know we are in love with our pets.
So we have three dogs.
I've got a spot for three photos
on the front of this dresser.
So I'm gonna carve them out of my CNC machine
just for a little something extra fun,
since this is gonna be for us in our home,
and I want it to be like a special piece.
I'm gonna use my CNC machine today
to make some cutouts of my dogs.
All right, to pull this look off,
I've got my peel and stick.
I ordered four of these just to be safe.
A ruler, a scraper to push the peel and stick down with,
and then a razor blade to cut the peel and stick
to the shape of the drawers.
I also have knobs on hand to zhuzh this up,
and then, of course, we're gonna use
what I've just done on the Makira
to give this some personality.
Let's see if we can pull this off.
I decided to start with these edges first
and get these wrapped all the way around,
and then do one large piece in this middle portion.
So I'm just measuring how many inches out these are
so I can cut one big strip
and then just wrap it around these edges.
Looks like these are a perfect square,
so I just need one, two, three inches.
And I'm trying to make sure
that the paper all goes in the same pattern,
so when I put it on the top in the drawers,
it looks like the way that real wood grain would flow.
I don't know if we'll be able to achieve that,
but I'm gonna try.
One corner, done.
One thing I did learn is on the corners,
it's for wrapping it like a gift,
so turning this part over first
and then pushing this down before you burnish this edge,
and that way it just keeps this corner nice and neat.
Whew, all right, I saved the hardest part for last,
and that is the top.
So I've got my top measurement done.
I'm gonna make sure I've got enough to cover over my edges,
and we'll get this last piece on.
One little strip in the back.
Wasn't quite long enough, so one last one,
and hopefully we can get this to blend in.
All right, I finished up the wallpaper,
and just so you know for reference,
it took me three rolls to get that done.
I ordered a fourth just in case,
and I have a ton left on this third one that I opened.
I probably could've used it better,
but I was, you know, I had it,
so I wanted to make sure it looked really good.
I could've probably lined my seams up better
and used more of this, but it is what it is.
At least I'll be able to return this one,
and these cost me $9 each on Amazon,
so I'll return this guy.
I've got $30 in on the wallpaper right now,
and those, the little Ikea dressers were two for 40,
so they're 20 bucks each, so.
I'm in 50 bucks to this project so far.
Now I've gotta get my little doggies stained
to go on the front of this piece.
I have a little test piece that I'm using
to see how I like the stain,
and then here's the paper, of course.
So I've just been using these different cans
like a mad scientist and trying to figure out what I like.
Now, I will tell you this much.
Our homeschool room is totally millennial gray.
It's the only room in the house
I think I haven't repainted at this point,
and I don't plan on it
because there's so much stuff that's in there
and the shelving units and everything.
I don't wanna move all that.
So I would've loved to go with a navy blue paper,
but all the ones that I found had too much tan in them,
and then they clashed with the wall,
so I'm thinking about maybe doing some sort of gray stain,
but I don't know that I love that,
but then I do like the dark walnut that's on here,
so maybe we'll go that route.
There's not much I can do about the millennial gray walls,
but I think we can make this work.
Let's see what we can mix up.
The dark walnut's a little too dark for me,
so I think I'm gonna cut it a little bit
using some mineral spirits.
So I'll probably do about half and half.
All right, I got my stain.
I've got my dog.
A little nervous.
Clean rag to wipe the bag with.
Let's get these stained.
So I totally lucked out and found plenty
of my favorite little brushed brass knobs to put on this.
I've got six of these left, which is perfect.
I'm gonna put my drawers back in
and then use a sharp little screwdriver
because I am just reusing the holes
that were already in this little dresser,
so I'll just punch through the wallpaper
and we'll get these attached.
Okay, now what's left is to put my little dog faces on here.
So I need to measure out my drawer
and find the center of this
and then figure out how I'm gonna split that into thirds.
And I'll mark all these with a pencil
because my little dog should cover the pencil marks
or I think it'll erase on this peel and stick,
so we should be okay.
So let's do some quick measuring here.
At $20 on this dresser, $30 in the wallpaper,
and some much needed storage for our homeschool room.
I think it looks pretty chic now and it matches.
No one needs to ask where their supplies are.
Everything is so nicely tucked away
and this was such a super quick flip.
This took me no more than half a day.
No paint anywhere, so if you've been standing
in front of a sad piece of furniture
telling yourself that you're gonna start
once you learn how to do it, maybe you don't need to.
Maybe you just need a roll of wallpaper.
And if you love content like this
and you are interested in how I find my pieces,
what I pay for them, how I price them,

I actually released an e-book earlier this month
and the link for that is down below.
It's got all of my secrets sitting in there.

because next week I'm gonna show you
how I bet $50 on an estate sale and walked away with $1,500.
You don't wanna miss it.
I'll see you soon.
Bye.
