AI GeneratedAlex from Daly's Fruit Tree Nursery visits Jessie at Tropical Fruit World to collect coffee seeds. The discussion highlights that coffee begins as an edible, antioxidant-rich berry containing the seed (bean). They also explore alternative uses for the plant, such as caffeine-free leaf tea, and provide tips on growing coffee plants in tropical environments.
Hi I'm Alex and welcome to Daly's Fruit Tree Nursery. We're here with Jessie at Tropical
Fruit World and I'm doing one of my all-time favourite things which is seed collecting. So
today we're collecting coffee seed and Jessie does tours and there's just this wealth of amazing
information and knowledge and interesting facts about all the different amazing fruits at Tropical
Fruit World. So what can you tell me about the coffee? So with the coffee lots of people don't
know that it comes first in a berry like this if you want to hold this little branch here.
So with this berry the seed or the part that we make the drink out of the bean let's say
is actually inside this berry but the outside berry part is actually very edible. So if I give
this one a little squeeze into my hand you'll see out pops there's the seed. So these are the seeds
that I collect and sow at the nursery and we have so many different varieties of coffee. And this
is also the bit that we would ferment and roast to make the familiar drink that we all know and
love and have most mornings. But yeah this part here the berry part of it you can either eat it
just as it is as a berry like that's really rich in antioxidants and vitamin c. It's got kind of a
sweetness about it would you say? That's really lovely. You can also make a cordial a syrup out
of these and interestingly you can also use the leaves here of the coffee to make another beautiful
tasty hot drink that actually doesn't contain any caffeine but still gives your body that similar
sort of peppy feeling and a nice hot refreshing beverage as well. So if you just crush that leaf
pop it into a cup of boiling water and you can drink that and make a nice soothing beverage.
Amazing and what I love as well is the fruit around the coffee seed it doesn't taste contain
caffeine. No it doesn't taste like coffee doesn't taste doesn't contain any caffeine so it's safe
for everybody to have. Yeah very good and they grow more in tropical regions they don't like
frost so they make a really great understory plant you can see this one's many years old it's huge
now but you can keep coffee plants pruned and keep them nice and manageable so you can also net them
from birds. The main thing is that birds will love to spread the seed so if you're next to
rainforest or anything like that just be careful and make sure you net them. But yeah that's the
amazing coffee plant so we'll leave some links in the description below of all the different
coffee varieties that we sell at Daly's Nursery and if you're interested in all these interesting
facts that Jessie talks about then join them for a tour here near the Gold Coast just south of the
Gold Coast in Australia and yeah here at Tropical Fruit World. Thanks so much Jessie, thanks for watching.
