We made a HUGE mistake entering Barnegat Inlet, not knowing it is one of the most dangerous on the East Coast of the U.S. We managed to get out with sinking the boat, but it was rough and scary. After a brisk sail, we dropped the hook in Sandy Hook to stay overnight and time the Hudson River with the incoming tide. It was EPIC returning to my home city by sailboat. Check it out.
NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.
So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!

A couple completes an epic sailing journey from St. Lucia to New York City. After navigating rough waters from Barnegat Bay to Sandy Hook, they enter Manhattan, anchoring near Ellis Island. The trip culminates in a celebratory gathering on their boat with longtime friends, featuring burgers and pizza against the backdrop of the iconic city skyline.
New York!
Oh yeah!
Oh yeah, here we are!
It's a beautiful morning here in Barnegat Bay.
We are leaving because the wind is perfect to get up to Sandy Hook today.
Goodbye Barnegat.
It's such a beautiful morning with the sun coming up over the dunes.
The inlet is just so different than it was last night when we got here.
Last night was just so rough.
Yeah, you can see the current is starting to pick up there.
So the plan today is about 52 miles, which should take us, I don't know, 8 to 10 hours.
Wow, do you feel the cold breeze coming off the water?
Look at the difference in water.
Wow.
Man.
Just got really cold.
We just took a total nosedive where the calm water meets the rough water.
Knocked a whole bunch of stuff down.
But I think we're okay.
And we're really having a push to get out of here.
Man, strong current.
Really? Already?
Yeah, look at these waves.
Wow, 7 feet.
Yeah, it's saying 12.
If we went over there, we could run aground.
We're through it.
Almost.
Leaving behind the crazy, look how smooth this is.
Back of the parasail.
Wow, it's such a beautiful sail today.
The seas are flat.
Not a huge amount of wind, but we're making great speed over ground.
We're doing 6.4 knots at the moment, and there was 6.3 knots of wind.
So that's a pretty rocking sail.
There's the Jersey Shore.
And it looks like our ETA into Sandy Hook is 240 in the afternoon.
Oh, we're getting close.
We can see the skyline of New York City.
How cool is that?
We have come such a long way.
Babe, can you believe where we're at right now?
I can't believe it.
From St. Lucia, this is like traveling to Jupiter.
I didn't think it was going to be possible.
But we're here.
What do you see over there?
That is the skyline of Manhattan.
Oh my goodness.
And the Verrazano Bridge.
We are coming to Sandy Hook.
This is Sandy Hook Point, and then this is all Sandy Hook here.
And this is where we're going to spend the night and get up early to get into the city as the sun rises.
That should be fun.
Okay, big moment.
We are picking up anchor here in Sandy Hook and heading to New York City.
Goodbye, Sandy Hook.
Cute little place for a nice overnight to get some sleep before heading into the craziness of Manhattan.
Down in New York.
Hey, hey, big city, big lights.
If I can do it, here I can do it anywhere.
New York, New York.
Boy, we've seen a lot of beautiful things out the back of the boat.
And never in a million years would I ever think that we would have had the bridge in our rear view mirror.
That's just wild.
This whole trip is wild.
I can't believe it.
Whoa, that helicopter just flew under the Verrazano Bridge.
That's crazy.
Oh, the smell of the water just reminds me, reminds me so much of when I lived here.
It's a beautiful day in New York.
Somehow I thought that the waterway would be much busier than it is right now.
It's pretty quiet, although we haven't gotten to near the Staten Island Ferry, which is just a bat out of hell we hear.
There she is.
Liberty.
Oh, yeah.
And the Statue of Liberty. Can you believe it, honey?
Well, we thought we would anchor behind the statue, but it's way too shallow with the tidal change.
So we are going to move to behind Ellis Island and drop anchor there.
Here is Ellis Island.
This is an absolutely amazing museum and park.
Well worth the visit to see the history of immigrants to America.
It's just a spectacular place.
All right, we've just dropped anchor.
And look at that, look at that view.
The $8 million view for free.
Our friend Alan is here just for today.
And we're going to pick him up at North Cove Marina.
All right, here we go.
There he is, there he is.
Jordan.
I love this.
Oh, I want the first hug.
I want the first hug.
Can you come in and like go into the city?
Is that what you're talking about?
Yeah.
12 bucks an hour.
A dollar per foot.
Look at that view.
It's such a surprise that I got wet.
Alan, this is the authentic experience.
Yay, Alan's on the bus.
No way.
Yay, Alan.
New York City.
Yay.
Is it candy?
Some chocolate, some madeleines.
Oh.
O and J, they said hello.
Caffeine and sugar.
Here we are.
We're cooking burgers.
Second time we've cooked on the grill.
Let's see what we've got in here.
Wow.
Is this cool or what?
Glorious first meal in Manhattan.
Yeah, with Alan.
Lunch with Alan.
Gourmet.
And then, wow.
Check it out.
Okay, grilling burgers with the skyline of Manhattan behind us.
Whoa, check it out.
I love this grill.
And famous Alan Wolf on the boat.
Woo.
Yes.
Ah, it's too soon, Alan.
I know, I was so fast.
Give everyone a big hug for us, okay?
Big hug to everyone watching.
There we go.
Oh, wow.
Oh, my God.
Ritual hug.
Thank you for hosting me.
That was amazing.
You're welcome.
So great to see both of you.
Likewise.
Safe flight.
Love you.
Bye.
Aw.
Wow.
That was awesome.
We're picking up Miss Hammersley right now.
Oh, my God.
Hey, good to see you.
She's back.
Oh, my God.
And look, I'm traveling much lighter than last time.
Hello.
Good to see you.
Oh, yeah, and don't think I'm a diva.
This was mostly as a mule for them.
All right.
Mademoiselles, is everything...
Oh, my God.
Good.
Thank you so much, Tracy.
You all remember Tracy from when we started.
She's been with us since the very beginning.
Happy to be back.
The lovely Eileen.
Heaven on Earth.
Oh, it's looking good, don't it?
I have a tiger in the background.
I've got racing going on.
The best pizzeria location in Manhattan.
No doubt.
And look at this view, you guys.
It's really difficult to put into words how amazing this day was.
Like we had just climbed Mount Everest.
For some reason, it felt epic.
A destination that we talked about for a year,
but maybe one that we never dreamed we would actually get to.
Or maybe it felt extra special because I was coming home.
Whatever the case, the cherry on top was sharing our $10 million view
with my longtime New York City friends, Alan and Tracy,
and enjoying the magical taste of New York pizza
as the sun set over Manhattan.
