December 7, 1995. A small probe separates from the Galileo spacecraft. At a speed of 106,000 miles per hour (171,000 km/h), a 140 times faster than a commercial airliner, it hurtles straight into Jupiter's atmosphere, becoming the first and only human-made object in history to penetrate the gas giant.
As the probe begins to enter the upper layers of the atmosphere, a cocoon of superheated plasma instantly flares up around the capsule. The temperature of this plasma stream reaches around 29,000 degrees Fahrenheit (16,000 degrees Celsius) almost three times hotter than the surface of the Sun! The heat shield vaporizes, dissipating the intense heat into space.

Most theoretical models had predicted massive reserves of water and dense cloud layers here. Instead, the probe's instruments detected an unexpectedly dry atmosphere, critically few cloud layers, and an anomalously high concentration of noble gases.
The capsule continues its descent, and within a couple of minutes, it is surrounded by impenetrable darkness—sunlight simply does not reach this deep. Fifty-eight minutes after entering the atmosphere, the probe transmits its final signal. At this moment, it is at a depth of 97 miles (156 km) below the planet's nominal surface. The pressure exceeds 22 atmospheres, the temperature has risen to 302 degrees Fahrenheit (150 degrees Celsius), and wind speeds are off the charts at over 400 miles per hour! (640 km/h). For the first time in history, we have evidence that these incredible hurricanes do not die down deep beneath the clouds, but continue to rage fiercely in the depths!
Immediately after this, the probe is simply crushed by the colossal pressure and completely vaporizes.
