The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, once seen as one of the Gulf's closest strategic partnerships, is showing signs of serious strain. UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed has reportedly sent a handwritten letter directly to Saudi Arabia's 90-year-old King Salman, an unusual move that US and Arab diplomats see as an attempt to bypass Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler. The outreach comes amid deepening disagreements between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi over Yemen, Sudan and regional security. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have also backed opposing sides in Sudan's civil war, while tensions erupted earlier this year when Saudi forces struck UAE-backed separatist allies in Yemen. The move is particularly significant because Mohammed bin Salman had previously proposed a mediation channel involving UAE national security adviser Tahnoon bin Zayed and Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman.
