A massive flood and debris surge struck the China-Nepal border in Tibet, with terrifying CCTV footage showing people fleeing as floodwaters and debris overwhelmed Gyirong Port.

The disaster followed a reported ice-rock avalanche/glacial collapse near the Lhende Khola, sending huge amounts of water, mud and debris downstream toward the China-Nepal border and Nepal’s Rasuwa district.

Chinese authorities launched rescue operations in the affected Tibetan region, while Gyirong County and Gyirong Port were severely impacted. The disaster has also triggered a major search for missing people on both sides of the border.

The exact mechanism behind the flooding remains under investigation. Current reporting points toward an ice-rock or glacial collapse that blocked the Lhende Khola, rather than definitively confirming a conventional glacial lake outburst flood.

Watch the terrifying CCTV footage from the China-Nepal border and see how the disaster unfolded.
