Hello everybody and welcome to my new YouTube video about the best river cruises in the
Douro Valley.
For those of you that don't know me, my name is Sara Cubón.
I have been a local tour guide here in the region for the past 10 years and on this video
I'm going to explore the best river cruises in the Douro Valley.
I'm going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages about each type of river cruise
so that you can choose the best one for you.
Before we start, a couple of important things.

Let's start!
The first option is to join a river cruise in a traditional caviolo boat.
These boats were used until the 60s to transport quarrels of port wine all the way from the
Douro Valley to the wine lodges in Porto where the wine would be aged before being shipped
to England.
I love these river cruises because they will take you on a journey back in time.
It's wonderful.
Moreover, because the caviolo boats are quite large, they usually have bathrooms on board
and they sell drinks.
Lastly, caviolo river cruises are the most affordable way, ranging from 12 euros and
a half for a one-hour river cruise to 25 euros for a two-hour river cruise.
These river cruises have some disadvantages though, most notably being super touristy.
This means that you have to book your tickets in advance and you're surely going to be sharing
the experience with dozens of people.
Another option is to join a small group river cruise in the Douro Valley.
I like this option a lot because even though it is only slightly more expensive than joining
a traditional caviolo river cruise, the boats are a lot smaller, as you can see, accommodating
8 to 16 people.
They have cushions, and thus they are a lot more comfortable.
And on top of that, they usually include a complimentary glass of wine.
So, overall, it's great value for the money.
Finally, if you have money to splurge, you can simply go for a private river cruise.
They take place on fantastic modern boats, usually with bathrooms on board, chest lugs
and posts on the deck for you to relax outdoors, and drinks and snacks that you can order previously.
It is truly a fantastic experience, but it can be quite expensive, especially if it is
just a couple renting an entire boat.
