Hello garden lovers, I hope you're well. Well in today's video we are going to look at four
four breeders brands, two from each one. So we are going to look at two very fragrant roses
from each breeder. Now I did do a series a while back pitching two roses against each other.
So two roses which are very similar and I was going to pitch them together for their fragrance,
their growth and health. But today we're doing something a little bit different. Today we are
picking two roses that are in bloom in my garden and I would say they're
they're not the most fragrant I would say. I'm not sure whether they're the most
fragrant but they certainly are in bloom. So I can only show you what is in bloom.
And I think your eyes immediately drawn to this one right because this one has the biggest blooms.
But size is not everything. We are going to compare the strength of the fragrances and we
are going to work as a team. Well the roses are working as a team. So let's start off with this
one here. Now these two roses are from the Cordes. And it happens though Cordes,
they're both from the Perfuma range because Cordes Perfuma range are the most fragrant.
In the Cordes Perfuma range there are quite a few that are very very fragrant but unfortunately
they're not in bloom. So these two are competing against the other six today.
Over here we have Fruity Perfuma, Gatton Prism Marie-José and also we have
Graffin Diana. So this is Dark Desire and Royal Perfuma in English. So this is team Cordes
and over here we have team Mayant. And team Mayant, this creamy white one here,
is White Parfum de Provence. And this one here, not many people grow in the UK,
this is Sweet Mademoiselle. Big blooms. Now these blooms can get up to about 10 centimetres
so they're really big, big blooms. This one here is Cordes, also called Jean Moreau
and maybe even called National Pride in some countries. So it's a lot of names this one.
And this one is Sweet Mademoiselle, also known as Mademoiselle Mayant.
So this is team Mayant making up this
combo there. And over here we have Polson's Rose. Now Polson's is the breeder of
Mum in a Million. Of course we all know Mum in a Million. This is also known as
Eta Renaissance. So the Renaissance range is the most favourite. And over here we have,
not a perfect bloom, but this one is Princess Alexandra Renaissance. And you do know this one
is very, very popular. This is widely grown. As widely grown as, I would say, Olivia.
Olivia Rose Austin. So making team Polson's there is Mum in a Million and Princess Alexandra
Renaissance. And over here we can't miss out, of course, David Austin's. Now David Austin,
there is a lot of very favourite roses in the David Austin range, but these are the only two
that I have. So over here is Boscobel. Boscobel is known to be a very favourite rose in the David
Austin range. And out of the yellows I've picked out, this is Poet's Wife. Now Poet's Wife is one
of the most fagrant yellow roses. And I've got two here because this is only a cutting.
These two blooms only came from a three-year-old cutting, so they are,
this is the second flush, they are rather small, so I put two together.
So making team David Austin is Boscobel and Poet's Wife. Now I'm going to take a sniff of
these four sets of flowers and I will give marks for each of them.
So we are going to go in for a sniff of this one first. So this one is Graffin Diana,
also known as Royal Perfumer. And Graffin Diana I think has one of the most
stronger scents. Let's go in for a sniff. Wow, wow, that's very strong. Ah, I think,
I think the bud is a little bit even stronger than this bloom here which is already about
three days old. So it does have a very strong fruity scent, lychees and elderflower,
so quite a complex scent, very strong. I'd say I'd give this, let's have another sniff,
I think I'd give this eight and a half for intensity of fragrance. And let's go for this one.
But I would say this is not the best contender to or participant for the Perfumer rose.
There is a couple of roses that are so, so fragrant, but unfortunately not in bloom. So
I suppose Fruity Perfumer is a very fragrant rose, but not as fragrant as say Raspberry Perfumer or
Madame Anisette, but they're not in bloom. So this one is, this one, we had a second flush
and quite a few blooms on it. So we are going to go in for a sniff. Wow, that is very strong too,
I take my words back, that is very, very strong. It has a strong fragrance of old rose and also,
let me have another smell, it has a nice raspberry fruity, well it is Fruity Perfumer,
so I guess it is a fruity scent. So what did I say? What did I say?
I reckon these two are eight and a half, eight and a half. So what we got 17, we got 17 on that.
So you have to help me, help me remember because I can't talk and remember at the same time.
I'm not that, yeah, I can't multitask that much and film. So help me remember. So we are on 17 for
Team Cordes. And moving on to this one here, I'm just going to reach over with this hand,
oh sorry, oh that's a smell. Wow, wow that is, because that bloom is only just opened maybe
this morning or maybe yesterday, that is a very strong fragrance. It has very fruity,
fruity notes with maybe a little bit of citrus. So it's actually quite complex.
That is a very strong fragrance. I say I give that one a nine. A nine for
White Parfum de Provence. And let me go for this Sweet Mademoiselle.
Wow, this is a lot more sweeter. So Sweet Mademoiselle is very sweet. Wow, has a bit of
I think tea and a little bit of myrrh base as well. Now what did I give that one? I think I'd
give that one an eight and a half. But the fragrance, these two fragrances are so different.
These two fragrances are very different. So eight and a half and nine. So that's 17 and a half.
Okay, we're moving on to team Thomson's. Now let's start off with Mum in a Million,
because I know for sure she is a very strong, strongly fragrant rose.
Wow, lovely. Ah, this particular bloom, so it's quite a fresh bloom. Very, very sweet,
very old rose. At this moment, I think this is not quite as fragrant as the
the Mayon. I think I'd give this one an eight, an eight. So we're going to go in for Princess
Alexandra of Renaissance. Now this bloom is not the best it could be. I wish I could get you a
bigger bloom. There is about four on there and they're all this stage. So I'm going to go in
for a sniff. While you, while I go in for a sniff, I'm just going to let you have a look at
Mum in a Million. Wow, that is a really good fragrance as well. That's a really good fragrance.
So very sweet, quite fresh citrus notes, maybe a little bit fruity as well.
So what did I say that one was? So we said eight and I say this is eight as well. So 16.
So we have, do we have joint place? That one's 16, right? Or 17? Oh my goodness. I have to go
back to the video and actually list the numbers. So that was 17. And over here we have nine and
eight, nine, eight, 17. This is 16. I'm really sorry. Very, very confusing video. All this,
fragrance is getting to my head. I don't know. I don't know where I am. So now we look at,
this is Boscobel. So David Austin, we are team Austin now, team Austin.
So we are going to reach in for Boscobel. I know it's a very, very good scent.
That is a really gorgeous scent too. That is so gorgeous. Yeah, not only is it gorgeous,
I think it's also very beautiful. Now I have to say this one's very, it does have very
complex. Oh, I'm not quite sure how to describe it. Very complex scent, quite unusual.
Has a bit of almond, bit of myrrh, bit of rose, and also like tropical fruits. Not just fruity,
but quite tropical fruits. So what do I give this? I say I give this eight and a half.
It's quite intense, but this one is very complex. In fact, actually they're all very, very good.
I think I'm going to get so confused. I'm going to go in for a sniff of the Poet's Wife now.
The blooms are a lot smaller, but they are, they are only just opened yesterday.
Wow. Very citrus, really nice fragrance. So that is the Poet's Wife. It's very floral and citrusy.
It's quite a fresh, zesty scent. So did I say eight and a half? I say eight and a half this
one as well. So 17. So I think based on all these here, now you do have to bear in mind,
not only is the fragrance, you do have to bear in mind the bloom,
the bloom age. Sometimes they are a bit, they do differ in different age of the bloom.
I think maybe this one, I'm a little bit let down by the Mum in a Million. I expect it to be
a bit more potent than this one. And maybe she's a let down by this very open bloom of
Alexandra Renaissance. So this is at the lowest point is Pulsons for 16. This one comes third
place. A little bit, yeah, this is a little bit underwhelming. I have smelt more fragrance roses
before. So this one is a fair fragrance, but this one a little bit stronger. But I would say if we
were to smell this at a different age, I think this would smell amazing. I have smelt more
amazing than that. What did I give this one? 8.5 and this one eight. So this is Fruity Parfumer.
Well, I can't remember, maybe it's eight and a half, maybe the other way. So I give this third
place to Cordes. Now Cordes could have easily snapped in a higher place if we had slightly
maybe different varieties that were in bloom. So we do have about 15 varieties to choose from,
but they're not in flower. So at the moment with this team here, team Cordes is 16 and a half.
I say the toss between the most fragrant team for these two roses here. Now, which one?
I think that one. That has very big blooms, right? That was very big blooms. Does size matter?
I'm not sure. Does size matter? I don't know. So I think, oh, that is a difficult one. I can't
remember what points I give this one, but these two are very, very fragrant. I would say this
one's very complex, but not as fragrant as some. This one is extremely fragrant as well.
So I think I give this one maybe 16 and a half. I would say eight and eight and a half for
Poet's Wife. Now I think the winner for these two, I think I would pick these two as my most
favorite roses on this table. Combined, they do have the edge over the other
six roses. I mean, they also are the biggest blooms. This White Puff Under Provence,
although it is a very big bloom, it does take time to produce such a heavy, heavy bloom. Look
at that. Look at the classic shape. Hybrid tea. So maybe size does matter because it might contain
more fragrance, but these two are quite fresh roses as well. They do have that advantage.
So I would say these two really deserve to be in the top place. What did I say it was? So it's
so we have 17 and a half points winner of this round of World of the Roses.
What a battle it is. So let me know which is your favorite pair, which breeder,
or if you grow any of these roses. And do you agree with my choice here? Let's say that these
two are the most favorite. I think individually, what do you think? What would be your top pick?
If you had to pick one of these roses, what would be your top pick? So let me know in the comments,
guys. I hope you enjoyed this fun comparison video. I hope to see you soon. Bye. Oh, I just
forgot. I was going to show you, so this is a bonus footage, two very similar roses. Now they're
very unique in color. I know it's not everyone's taste or cup of tea, but here we have two tan
colored roses. Now this one with the frilled edge has only opened today. And as with this one as
they are the same age, we can compare them. This one here is Mocha Rosa. Mocha Rosa has frilled edges.
Let me see the profile of these roses. So the profile, let's see the profile.
So the profile of these roses are also quite similar, aren't they? Mocha Rosa is tan all over,
whereas the Coco Loco here does have some pink tones, some mauve tones on the outer petals.
So this is what they look like. From the side, these petals face upwards and it is quite a flat
profile. And the Mocha Rosa here, you see the petals curl backwards. So this is how you
differentiate the two varieties. So now we come back to the bloom shape. Yeah, so this is Mocha Rosa
and this is Coco Loco. So you might have already grown these two roses, but if you are thinking
about buying any of these two roses, I just want to give you the comparison. Right, so
I think this has more of a greyish tone in there, isn't it? And the shape is very, very beautiful.
So this one, the petals curl backwards. That is one of the main differences that I can see
straight away. So if the petals curl backwards, that is Coco Loco. And if the petals are a little
bit more ruffled like that, that is Mocha Rosa. So I'm going to go in for a sniff because I do
know for sure these two roses are both very fragrant. Wow, that is nice. That is, I would say,
comparable to any of these roses here, any of these. This is comparable. So that is a really
sweet scent, very fruity. And I have said before, I didn't expect a fruity floral scent from a tan
rose like this because you think that it might be a bit more musky and a bit more leathery and
myrrh based, but it's not. It's very floral and sweet, that one. So we're going to sniff this one
here now. This is Coco Loco. Let's go in for a sniff. This one does have a deeper fragrance,
a little bit on the licorice side. So this one, the fragrance does suit that rose.
Wow, both super, super fragrant roses. So yeah, very, very fragrant roses here.
So that is, that really is the end of my video and I hope you enjoy it.
And let me know which one is your favourite.
