The first few seconds almost make it look like one dancer.

Then the formation opens.

This is Kalavinka (迦陵频伽), a Chinese dance inspired by the mythical Kalavinka, a figure found in Buddhist tradition and art that is commonly represented with human and birdlike characteristics and celebrated for its beautiful voice. Kalavinka imagery became especially prominent in Chinese Buddhist art, including Dunhuang traditions.

What makes this performance so mesmerizing is how the dancers repeatedly merge into a single silhouette, then unfold into completely different formations.

Sometimes you see a bird.
Sometimes you see one figure.
Then suddenly, you see everyone.
