The Justice Department says it has disrupted a Chinese hacking operation responsible for
break-ins at several government entities, including the U.S. Senate, the Federal Reserve,
and the Justice Department itself.
Chief Washington correspondent Mike Emanuel has details.
They're going to reload and try to come at us again.
The Justice Department is on alert after uncovering and derailing a major Chinese cyber espionage
network.
This is state-sponsored, and this is a major national security issue for the United States.
Hackers linked to Chinese military and intelligence services reportedly using a private company
to mask their cyber-secret activities.
Among the targets, the Departments of Energy, Justice, Health and Human Services, along
with the National Institutes of Health, NASA, Federal Reserve, and U.S. Senate, plus American
military networks, hospitals, and power companies.
This is something that we have talked about with our counterparts in China for many, many
years.
And they know that we know that it's happening, and it has to stop.
The U.S. government has seized three Internet domains affiliated with the Chinese company
allegedly used as a cyber-spying portal.
No reaction yet from the Chinese government, which routinely denies U.S.-focused hacking
claims.
But American cyber-security companies are warning this latest Chinese-based intrusion
puts the country in danger of a major artificial intelligence-driven hack that could potentially
disrupt public and private supply chain sectors, banks, utilities like the water supply, and
oil production industries.
Industrial espionage is still the biggest thing because of the financial gain, right?
I mean, or just espionage in general.
So, you know, to me, our biggest adversaries are going to be the other superpowers in the
world like China, Russia.
The concern, foreign cyber-criminals are reportedly using Chinese AI models that lack the same
safeguards as American models.
Trump administration officials met earlier this month with industry leaders to finalize
a framework for vetting cyber-security risks of advanced artificial intelligence models.
Brett?
Big story.
Mike, thank you.
