In 1975, Eric Carmen heard this melody and turned it into one of the most famous pop songs ever recorded.
He was right to. The Adagio sostenuto from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 contains one of the most achingly beautiful melodies in the history of Western music, a line so complete, so perfectly formed, that it was essentially waiting to be stolen.
But before the pop song, before the film soundtracks, before every romantic cliché that borrowed from it — there was this. The original. The source. And in this performance by Khatia Buniatishvili with the Filarmonica Teatro Regio Torino, you hear exactly why someone couldn't leave it alone.
The movement opens with a clarinet and flute dialogue that feels like a conversation between two people who don't yet know they are in love. Then the piano enters and everything changes.
Buniatishvili plays the Adagio with an improvisatory freedom that makes the melody sound freshly discovered rather than endlessly repeated. This is the Rachmaninoff Adagio as it was meant to feel: not as a classic, but as a secret.
