This is Alicudi — one of the most isolated islands in the world.
Surrounded by the crystal-clear Mediterranean, yet there is not a single natural source of fresh water here. There is no hospital, and there are no natural resources.
The island is completely surrounded by steep cliffs plunging straight into the sea. The only way around is through thousands of steep stone steps winding across the volcanic slopes.
And yet, one hundred local residents still live happily here, in a village built on slopes reaching more than sixty degrees. Instead of settling on flat land, people built their homes close together, almost “hanging” from layers of volcanic rock, seemingly defying gravity itself.
