From every direction, out of the black countryside, they are coming. Farm carts creaking under sacks and cages. Pack-horses swaying with panniers. Women balancing baskets of eggs on their heads. Drovers cursing softly behind sleepy cattle. A girl carrying a goose under each arm. An old man wheeling a barrow of cabbages through the mud.

They are all heading for the same place — the little market square at the centre of the small walled town on the hill. Because today is market day. And market day was the loudest, smelliest, most crowded, most economically important, and most gloriously alive day of the entire medieval week.

Today we walk through a medieval market day from dawn to dusk. The pre-dawn arrivals. The market cross. The set-up of the stalls. The town bailiff opening the market. The cattle sold in one corner, the sheep in another. The fishmonger's stall. The cloth-merchant's booth. The vegetable-sellers. The bread-and-pie sellers. The travelling pedlar with his tray of ribbons and needles. The moneylenders. The town alehouse packed by noon. The children running underfoot. The dogs stealing meat. The fights over prices. The medieval market court settling disputes on the spot. And the long slow trudge home at dusk with the day's takings.
