The Outer Banks are disappearing—but what scientists are finding beneath them reveals an even bigger story.

Beneath North Carolina’s famous barrier islands lies evidence of an ancient lost landscape: submerged forests, buried Ice Age rivers, prehistoric land surfaces, and thousands of shipwrecks hidden beneath shifting sand. Scientists have even studied a remarkably preserved 50,000-year-old forest beneath the Atlantic, offering a glimpse of a world that existed when sea levels were dramatically different.

The Outer Banks themselves were never meant to stay still. Waves, tides, hurricanes, and powerful Atlantic currents constantly move sand, causing these barrier islands to migrate and reshape themselves. In some locations, scientists have documented significant shoreline retreat, while major storms can transform the coastline almost overnight.
But the most fascinating discoveries are beneath the water.

Geologists have mapped ancient river valleys buried below the Atlantic seafloor—remnants of a time when the coastline extended much farther east during the Ice Age. Archaeologists also believe prehistoric people once traveled and lived across areas that are now completely submerged. Stone tools, peat deposits, and preserved plant material provide clues to this forgotten landscape.
Using satellites, lidar, sediment cores, underwater archaeology, and other modern technologies, scientists are reconstructing what existed before the Atlantic reclaimed this land—and tracking how North Carolina’s coastline continues to change today.

The Outer Banks aren’t simply disappearing. They’re revealing what was hidden beneath them.
