Tour Alexis Dornier's Private Residence in Bali That Sits Atop The Heights of Uluwatu.

Lebar is the word for "wide" or "expansive" in Indonesian and is the core idea of the house designed by Bali-based architect Alexis Dornier for himself. Like a panoramic photo, the house frames the landscape of the views of Uluwatu outside. The home is encompassed by glass lined with gold anodized aluminum.

Dornier used compassionate self-inquiry to reflect and understand why he liked certain things. This process made him realize that most of what he's drawn to stems from his childhood or early years. Lebar's simple form mirrors not only his grandfather's home in the south of Germany by a lake that he used to visit as a child, but it also takes inspiration from his time in Santa Barbara, California during his teens. These memories also informed the home's mid-century modern style - fleshing out the silhouette of iconic homes such as the Stahl House.

"I got first introduced to the idea of architecture through watching movies," Dornier says. "I'm intrigued by how architecture can be the backdrop of scenes and stories taking place."

The home features a blood red oversized couch the architect designed himself. Its stacked uneven cushions of tubes and extruded semi-circles can be reconfigured to match any situation. Above it hangs a large hand-hammered gold ring pendant light that is paired with the bar pendant light above the dining table.
