Bonnie Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins in a Welsh council house, accidentally destroyed her vocal cords screaming in frustration after surgery, and emerged with the most iconic rasp in music history — the voice that powered "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to simultaneous UK and US number ones and over one billion Spotify streams.

She died on July 8, 2026, in Faro, Portugal, aged 75, leaving behind a husband of 53 years and two extraordinary homes. Her 1850-built Mumbles mansion overlooking Swansea Bay, bought in 1988 and transformed over years with hand-fitted American oak paneling and Liberty-commissioned stained glass.

Her all-glass Algarve villa, demolished and rebuilt from scratch in 2009 with full sea views, cypress trees, and garden water features — the sanctuary she called paradise. Together with Robert Sullivan, she built a $40 million portfolio spanning 22 Berkshire properties, Welsh rental homes, 65 horse-riding stables, and a New Zealand dairy farm. The voice was never supposed to sound like that.

Nothing about her life was supposed to go this way. It was extraordinary anyway.
