Dolphins are mammals that breathe air, yet they spend their entire lives in the ocean. So how can they fall asleep without ceasing to breathe?
Dolphins solve this problem through unihemispheric slow-wave sleep: one half of the brain rests while the other remains more wakeful. This allows them to keep swimming, surface for air, maintain contact with their group and monitor their surroundings.
