A powerful M7.2 earthquake struck near Coracora, Parinacochas, Ayacucho, Peru, according to Peru’s IGP, with the quake originating about 108 km (67 mi) deep inside the subducting Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. The earthquake was felt across parts of southern and central Peru, including toward Lima. It comes just days after Peru held a nationwide drill based on a feared M8.8 Lima–Callao megathrust earthquake and tsunami scenario along the Peru–Chile subduction zone
