The Second Augustan Legion occupied Caerleon in South Wales for over two centuries. Then, suddenly around AD 296, they left. No farewell inscription, no surviving order and strangely no explanation. The coin sequence stops and the record goes silent.
What's equally strange is what people have reported since. In houses built over the buried Roman road that once ran around the fortress perimeter, residents have heard hobnailed boots on the road and a marching call in Latin.
This is the history of Rome's Second Legion, where they went and why the Roman ghost stories at this site feel unusually hard to dismiss.
