If every ancient monument suddenly returned to the day it was completed, much of what we believe about it would probably change. Ruined walls would rise to their original height. Empty courtyards would fill with people. Faded surfaces would recover their colors, wooden structures would reappear, and spaces that seem isolated today would reconnect with roads, houses, markets, and entire landscapes now lost. What survives can therefore be deceptive. We often judge ancient places by the fragments left behind, even though those fragments may represent only a small part of what their creators actually experienced. Archaeology tries to reverse that disappearance piece by piece, rebuilding not only structures but the worlds that once surrounded them. And sometimes, the smallest surviving detail is enough to reveal that an ancient place looked, functioned, and meant something completely different from what its ruins first suggest.
