What's up with these spotty leaves?

A fungus called tar spot is affecting urban forests in Halifax, particularly Norway maples. Fueled by a wet spring and dry summer, the fungus creates unsightly brown spots on leaves. While the infection makes trees look stressed and brittle by mid-August, it causes no permanent damage to the trees. The condition is widespread across the Maritimes and Ontario this year.
