In this immersive episode of Survive History, presenter Louee Dessent travels back to ancient Greece to experience the brutal training and battlefield realities of the heavily armed citizen soldier—the Greek hoplite.
Hoplite warfare was built around the phalanx: tightly packed ranks of citizens fighting shoulder to shoulder, relying on discipline, cohesion and the shields of the men around them. What did it actually feel like to carry the armour, shield and weapons of a Greek hoplite? And could you survive the exhaustion, heat, fear and violence of a close-order battle?
From Spartan agoge training to Athenian ephebe military education, we explore how young Greek soldiers were prepared for warfare. Louee tests an authentic-style Corinthian helmet, a heavy double-gripped hoplite shield, bronze and leather armour, spear and sword—and discovers just how physically demanding Greek warfare could be.
He takes on the hoplitodromos, the famous Greek hoplite race that tested a soldier's ability to move rapidly in heavy armour, trains with a weapons master (hoplomachos), and experiences the terrifying close-quarter combat of the Greek phalanx.
Could you withstand the heat, exhaustion and sheer physical pressure of fighting in the front ranks of a hoplite battle? Let's find out.
🔥 What You'll Discover in This Episode:
🗡️ Spartan vs. Athenian Training — The Spartan agoge and Athenian ephebic military training.
🗡️ The Hoplite Panoply — Testing the weight, mobility and vision restrictions of ancient Greek armour and the Corinthian helmet.
🗡️ The Hoplite Race — Experiencing the hoplitodromos in heavy battle equipment.
🗡️ Weapons Masterclass — Training with the dory spear and xiphos sword, including close-combat techniques.
🗡️ The Hoplite Diet & Greek Wine — Discover the relatively frugal diet of ordinary Greek citizens and hoplites, built around legumes, vegetables, olives and coarse bread, with meat more often reserved for festivals and special occasions. We also explore the central role of wine in Greek life—and why Greeks traditionally drank it diluted with water, contrasting their practice with the stereotype of “barbarian” wine-drinking.
🗡️ Pre-Battle Rituals — Exploring sacrifice, religious ritual, watchwords and the role of the gods in Greek warfare.
🗡️ The Phalanx — Experiencing the terrifying reality of fighting shoulder to shoulder in a Greek hoplite formation.
🗡️ Battlefield Aftermath — Exploring the tropaion, captured weapons and the dedication of military equipment at Greek sanctuaries such as Olympia and Delphi.
The world of ancient Greek warfare is also back in the spotlight thanks to Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is bringing Homer's ancient Greek epic to a huge modern audience. While Nolan's film explores the much earlier Bronze Age world of Odysseus and the Trojan War, this episode takes you into the very different world of the Greek hoplite, Spartan warrior and Classical Greek phalanx.
