Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' became the first feature-length commercial film to be shot and released entirely in 70mm IMAX. The quest was decades in the making, with Nolan first shooting action sequences on 70mm IMAX for 'The Dark Knight.' His later films, such as 'Inception,' 'Interstellar,' 'Tenet' and 'Oppenheimer,' utilized more scenes shot in 70mm IMAX, the latter movie requiring a brand-new 70mm IMAX film stock in black-and-white.

However, the biggest challenge remained the sound of the 70mm IMAX camera — the motor required to pull such a large film stock was too loud for dialogue scenes. To solve this, the team at IMAX created brand-new Keighley Camera, the first 70mm IMAX camera in decades. They also created a "blimp" that the Keighley Camera could fit into to further dampen the noise during dialogue scenes. THR went to IMAX Headquarters in Los Angeles to go behind-the-scenes and see how 'The Odyssey' 70mm IMAX film negative is processed, scanned and hand cut by negative cutters.

Eventually, the film print gets sent out to select theaters, such as AMC Lincoln Square in New York City, one of the largest IMAX screens in the world. In New York, we speak to the IMAX projectionist at Lincoln Square, as he preps for 'The Odyssey' opening weekend, where screening are occurring around the clock and have been sold out months in advance.
