AI GeneratedThis video outlines the essential denim trends for 2026, emphasizing a shift toward intentionality, structure, and sophisticated, polished looks. It advocates for timeless silhouettes like mid-rise and bootcut styles while advising against \"costumey\" or overly casual trends to achieve an elevated, professional aesthetic.
In 2026, jeans are becoming a lot more intentional.
And today I'm breaking down the top denim trends
that are in while also discussing the ones that are out,
as well as style tips
so you guys know exactly how to wear these.
The first trend we're gonna talk about
is patched denim jeans.
These have been seen time and time again
and previously have been in the form
of a sailor type of jean.
Patch pockets are the easiest way
to take a basic pair of denim jeans
and make them instantly look more stylish,
creative, and unique.
We've got patch pockets that sit directly in front
on the top of the thigh as well as in the back.
This gives your denim a subtle 70s vibe
with adjacent utility inspired appearances
without turning the whole thing into a costume.
Patch pocket jeans are showing up in many designer
and affordable collections,
particularly straight leg and wide leg silhouettes.
Out are leopard print jeans.
These were hot, hot, hot, hot, hot, not too long ago,
but now they do in fact look costumey.
The prince enters the room before anything else
and not only are they distracting,
they're loud and messy.
As for your style tip,
because the pockets are the main feature,
keep the rest of your outfit simple.
Depending on the time of year,
you can wear a turtleneck, a cropped blazer,
tucked button down shirt.
If you have straighter hips and or a rectangle body shape,
these patch pockets are going to do just that.
Next trend that may ruffle some feathers
for people out there are mid-rise jeans.
Previously, it was strictly high-rise
and if anything, super high-rise,
but now mid-rise is taking center stage.
It's a good in-between if you hate low-rise
and you're sick of high-rise
because we're also seeing that a lot of tops now
are becoming longer in length,
meaning that you don't have to worry
about wearing crop tops with all your jeans.
To make a long story short,
crop tops pair well with high-waist jeans
because you're extending your waistline.
Now that we have mid-rise jeans and popularity,
the tops are going down
and a more conservative approach is the way to go.
What is changing is that the assumption of only high-rise
and extreme low-rises
should just flat out work for everybody.
These are part of a broader 90s revival
instead of sticking to the early 2000s with low-rise
that show off your belly button
and extreme high-rises that have been a constant for years.
Mid-rise is particularly useful
if you have a shorter torso.
Your petite and high-rises go right up to your bra area.
You want a more relaxed look.
You experience zipper bunching
or you prefer to tuck in your tops
without making your torso look extremely short.
As a tip, the waistband should sit comfortably
above or below the fullest area of your stomach.
Doing so will avoid any cutting and digging
of the waistband into your stomach
that makes it insanely uncomfortable.
Any rolling or bunching
can make all-day wear very uncomfortable.
The next denim trend are structured denim dresses.
But before we get into that,
we're nixing crisscross jeans.
These are really popular
because they were just strange and eerie
and people had never seen them before.
The asymmetrical waistband
immediately made outfits look different,
but also made it very complicated for wearing belts,
tucking in your shirts,
and complicated pairings with any kind of jacket.
Luckily now, denim jeans
are not just for hoedowns and rodeos.
Collections have structured denim dresses
with less of shape and structure.
A denim dress gives you the ease of wearing a one-piece
while still creating the structure needed
to refine your silhouette just like jeans do.
The most flattering silhouettes to look out for
when it comes to a denim dress
are any form that come in an hourglass tailored silhouette,
a fit and flare shape,
dark denim styles,
and solid prints,
meaning no distressing,
which we'll get into later,
and thick, coarse materials.
You want your dresses to have structure and shape
and not feel like they're going to fall apart or rip apart.
If you're on the shorter side,
do pick something that hits just slightly above the knee.
If you're going for a more elegant look
for a T-length denim dress,
avoid anything that hits mid-calf.
This is going to look bad on everybody.
And let the dress be the talk of the town.
Keep your accessories light.
Do not wear cowboy boots.
This is an item you're going to wear
seasonally,
so feel free to tune your accessories
to the season you're in.
It's always a discussion
of how big the legs of jeans should be.
And with that,
we're going into our next denim trend
with tailored wide leg jeans.
This is a much fresher option to the wide leg
because it falls cleanly from the hip
and resembles a trouser.
This isn't a super wide leg through the entire leg.
Wide leg denim remains a major category
because it looks expensive with its controlled volume,
clean fronts,
and full length hems.
However,
these extreme flare leg jeans
that should only be ever seen at Coachella,
if that,
are gone.
This is where you get into that costume effect
of starting to look like a horse with a giant hoof.
Also not very versatile
and not friendly for all age groups.
These tailored jeans feature fitted waistbands,
a clean finished hem,
minimal bunching,
a straight vertical fall from the hip,
and fabric with enough weight to hang
instead of collapsing and weighing your entire body down.
Because this does still have a wide leg,
keep everything very streamlined and fitted on top.
Avoid anything that's going to hang below your waistline.
Don't wear this with an oversized sweater.
Keep everything tight and prim up top.
These jeans are going to make you look very tall,
very lean,
and anything other than a fitted upper style
is going to crash this.
Next trend are front paneled jeans.
Anything that has a front panel
has these lines or paneling in the front of the leg.
This is definitely a new one
that uses seam inserts or pieces of denim
to create visible vertical structure.
Please ignore anything that has heavy whiskering.
Whiskering are these faded horizontal lines
that happen on the top of your thigh
to imitate natural wear.
But aggressive whiskering has the opposite effect
of what we want for you.
These horizontal lines make your hips look wider.
Meanwhile, things with a vertical seam
can in fact make you look taller
and make a basic pair of jeans feel more tailored.
This is going to be your pick
if you're into a little bit more fashionable of an item
because the makeup of these is more interesting,
but also an item to tread carefully with
because if you've got a lot of design
going on on the bottom of your jeans,
you got to keep the top clean and crisp.
Otherwise, it's going to look a little janky.
Next up are dark indigo jeans.
Indigo is one of the darkest colors and washes
you can possibly get with jeans.
So think of midnight blue, but it's not black.
On the opposite side of the spectrum,
it's time to deviate from very light washes.
Light wash denim will always have a place,
especially in summer months,
but even then this past summer, it wasn't a thing.
But if your goal is polished, expensive looking denim,
dark indigo is the stronger investment.
Inky indigo in these midnight washes
are the clearest polished denim trend of 2026.
It gives jeans the appearance of business pants,
but allows them to work with blazers, blouses,
dressier shoes, and more elevated outfit.
The secret with dark denim
is that it creates fewer visual interruptions.
Without bright fading, whiskering, holes, and distressing,
the eye travels smoothly up and down the leg.
This will make you not only appear longer, leaner,
but clean up your entire outfits,
which equals sophistication.
There are a few brands that do this really, really well.
But of course,
if you're looking for a less expensive option,
Abercrombie frequently features jeans
and a ton of washes and a lot of dark ones at that.
They also frequently go on sale.
So make sure you watch out for those special promotions.
Next one we have, which is really important,
especially in the summer and fall months,
and yes, even spring, but more so in summer and fall,
are denim skirts.
Why I'm emphasizing summer and more so fall at that
is because we are staying in that dark denim category
and a denim skirt in the fall is chef's kiss.
It is Gilmore Girls.
It is clean.
It is luxe.
It's equestrian.
It's old money.
It's just clean.
Denim minis have returned with popular designers,
such as Dior.
Pencil skirts, while popular a couple of years ago,
are the ones you're going to ignore.
This is the time to show off your leg.
Wear some slick boots, cute kitten heels, fall sweaters.
You can dress up a denim skirt
in ways you could never do before.
Aritzia has by far the best denim skirts.
Heavyweight without weighing you down
and very sturdy and come in beautiful washes.
I also found a skort off of Amazon that is so stretchy.
It's so comfortable.
Also comes in this really nice dark indigo wash.
So if you just happen to like more of a skort variation,
that one's going to fill your cup.
Just be sure to look at ones with very clean hems.
Don't go for anything with a fray.
And if you want to kick it up a notch,
pair it with a beautiful leather belt
for extra style points.
For this next one, we have bootcut jeans.
Bootcut jeans were gone for a very long time.
And after 15 plus years,
they have been back and better than ever.
These aren't reserved for super low rise early 2000s
sitcom queens.
They're for all of us.
And unlike the super flare jeans,
you still get some volume, which is amazing
if you're on the shorter side
and love to wear heels under these
while keeping that specific heel hidden.
But it does wonders for your legs,
just like a flare jean does
without making you look like a clown.
Now it's time to talk about parachute jeans
because I still see people wearing these out and about.
And it's one thing if this is the only pair of jeans
in your closet,
but these do not make you look very elegant or stylish
in any kind of way.
They look like sweatpants.
They look like pajamas.
And I get everybody had a COVID moment,
but we're moving on.
We're over that.
Bootcut jeans are incredibly wearable.
And the modern fit is fitted through the hip and thigh
while opening subtly,
keyword subtly below the knee,
not whabam like a parachute in a flare leg.
The smaller opening at the leg balances the thigh
without overwhelming the rest of the body.
These are particularly effective and flattering
if you have fuller hips and thighs,
broader shoulders,
legs you want to make look longer,
you wear boots or heels frequently,
or you just want jeans that look slightly dressier.
The hem should nearly touch the floor
when wearing with your go-to choice of shoes.
If you're wearing a pair of jeans
and these are ending before they hit the floor
and your shoe is showing,
it interrupts the entire leg lengthening effect.
So keep that in mind
when shopping for your new favorite pair.
Now, if you just don't like basic blues
and you're like, I need a color in here,
we have got to beige and ivory washes.
There have been jeans from every end of the spectrum,
but now we are clocking in on classy
and dare I say the beige mom aesthetic.
A bright red or bubblegum pink jean
likely only works for a fraction of your tops
and occasions at that.
Cream and ivory tones
provide the freshness of colored denim
and the lightness needed
to be insanely functional and refreshing.
Cream, accrue, buttermilk, ivory,
these are the color names you should be looking out for.
This looks much softer
than a pair of black jeans or colored jeans,
yet even more refined than white jeans.
These are great alternatives
if you need some color and variation
in your denim collection.
Pair absolutely perfectly with camel,
burgundy, navy, black, olive, soft blues, and blacks.
One tip you should be ultra aware of
is depending on the jeans you get,
they can be slightly see-through
because these are still a light wash denim choice.
With that being said,
make sure you're pairing your underwear and undergarments,
skin color, flesh tone.
Nobody wants to see your underwear
looking like a highlighter under your jeans
or at the waistband.
This is how you're gonna make it seamless and camouflage.
I know I'm not the only one
who hates wearing bras in the summer.
Between tank tops, vacation outfits,
strapless dresses, and resort wear,
I feel like I'm constantly trying to find a bra
that actually works with each individual outfit.
That's why I've been reaching for these from Cake's Body.
Instead of having a different bra
for every neckline, backless top, or tank,
these are basically a one-and-done solution.
This is the Cake's Strapless Cleavage Bra.
What I like is that they use medical-grade adhesive
around the outside, but the center is adhesive-free
to help protect the sensitive nipple area
while still staying secure.
They're incredibly lightweight, comfortable,
and honestly, after a few minutes,
I completely forgot I'm wearing them.
Just look at the difference.
No bra strap showing, no bulky cups, no awkward lines,
and I don't have to stress about matching
a specific bra to a specific outfit.
Whether it's a tank top, sundress, vacation outfit,
or a tricky neckline, they just work.
I love products that solve an actual problem,
and these have made getting dressed so much easier.
If you're like me, you would've rather skipped the bra
whenever possible, definitely check out Cake's Body.
They've become one of my favorite
summer wardrobe essentials.
This is a trend I'm not a particular fan of,
but it's still a trend, so we need to talk on it,
and it's the barrel-leg jeans.
People are not giving up on barrel-leg jeans,
and believe me, I do understand they're really,
they're fun, they do create shape,
and they work with everybody.
But one thing we're absolutely not gonna talk about
are sweatpant jeans.
They, once again, had a moment during COVID
and people working from home all the time
because they're comfortable,
but the screen printing never did not look tacky.
The construction on these was superb
in terms of making a jean a sweatpant,
but anything with an elastic or drawstring waist
pretending to be a jean is just never gonna hit the dot.
Barrel-leg jeans remain one of the top silhouettes for 2026.
The updated versions have even a more defined waist,
still have that roominess through the thigh,
and pinch down at the calf.
If you're buying a barrel-leg jean,
do not let these hit below the ankle.
They're gonna swallow you up
and not give you that bow-legged look you're going after.
Barrel-leg jeans work particularly well
if you have a straighter body shape
and you're looking to add shape.
You need more room through the thighs.
You like more minimal outfits,
but you want a more interesting approach,
and or you want volume without relying on a wide-leg jean.
The widest part of the barrel-leg jean
should hit at the widest part of your thigh.
Opt for dark washes with minimal stitching
and that subtle taper
will all make the shape a lot easier to wear.
These jeans should curve around your body,
not create an independent weather system.
Finish these with a narrower shoe,
such as a loafer, a pointed flat, a kitten heel,
a high heel, or a sleek ankle boot for a slight Western look.
These will always be a staple,
but they keep getting tweaked every year,
and that is stovepipe jeans.
Stovepipe are pretty special
because they are a straight-leg jean,
but they basically just frame your body
without being suffocating like a skinny jean.
And while skinny jeans are never gonna be something
you should completely get out of your closet
and throw away and burn,
don't be reaching for them this year.
For many wardrobes, stovepipe and straight-leg jeans
offer the same clean lines and flexibility
that skinny legs do,
but are more coming-of-age and modern.
Stovepipes are the perfect bridge
between skinny jeans and wide-leg jeans,
so they're a great option if you miss skinny jeans,
you're sick of wide legs,
and want to show off more of your shape
without being suffocated.
You should be able to pinch some fabric throughout the leg.
These are excellent options
if wide legs overwhelm your frame
and make you look shorter,
you are petite,
you want jeans for wolfers and ballet flats,
you prefer a classic wardrobe,
or you need something streamlined under coats and jackets,
and a full-length stovepipe
to reach the very top of your shoe.
These jeans create the polished effect
people want from a skinny jean
without requiring your ankles to lose their blood supply.
This one may seem like a minor detail,
but I promise you it has tremendous importance,
and that is a seamed and finished hem.
If you don't know what I mean,
I'm gonna tell you what not to focus on,
and that is anything with a furried hem.
These made it really easy before,
if you bought jeans and they didn't fit,
you just slice the bottom and you're good to go.
However, they do look rather trashy in year of 2026,
and they don't look formal.
Excessive frame, hanging threads
that you may or may not be tripping on,
they make a well-fitted pair of jeans
look unfinished and begging for help.
Meanwhile, a clean seamed hem
gives a clear ending to the silhouette.
This is really the difference
between coloring the lines in your coloring book
and scribbling all over the place.
Deliberately finished denim
is the return of professional styling
without having to actually hire a professional stylist.
The hem determines where the eye drops,
and having a frayed edge
creates unneeded busyness and chaos.
Their overall look is much more clean and elegant
and makes you look a lot more put together.
Bonus points, your grandmother
will no longer complain to you.
This is also going to be inclusive
of jeans that have a cuffed hem,
but if you are on the petite side,
be very weary of this
because this will make you look undoubtedly shorter.
If you have a pair of frayed denim jeans
and you don't wanna buy a new pair,
you can go ahead, cut off the frayed portions,
cuff them up your shelf,
and get either a handheld sewing machine
or a fabric glue and seal those hems up
to make them clean and crispy.
Next one we have to talk about are cropped flares.
The cropped flare is an updated version on flares,
but includes the popular capri styles
that have made an entrance.
Think of these like a pair of capris
where they're through the thigh and hip,
and then flare out just the teeniest bits
right below your knee.
Provides movement and a little feminine edge
without committing to full on flares
or a wide leg capri.
With this being said,
we are saying goodbye
to these gaucho wide leg capri jeans,
which are cropped,
but very much not cropped in the right way
because while we have an option for a wide leg,
as mentioned in the earlier part of this video,
these wide leg gaucho styles
make you look thick, wide, and super boxy.
These are one of the most difficult shapes to style
because they make you look like a box,
which in terms of denim and fashion in general
is usually not at all the target.
And can even make the most beautiful supermodel
look a bit off.
These look beautiful with a pair of slingback heels
and pointed flats.
Don't go bringing your gym shoes with this.
This is not an athleisure gym type of style.
Veronica Beard has amazing cropped flares
that are stretchy,
but come in premium denim materials.
These give you a really nice and fun alternative
to other denim styles,
especially if you're going somewhere that's slightly warmer,
you're not a fan of denim shorts,
and you really like to have that Pinterest style with you
as you're moving and grooving through the seasons.
And now is the time for your little denim cheat sheet
for your body shape.
If you want your legs to look longer,
go for boot cuts, dark indigo washes,
tailored wide legs, front seam jeans,
and stovepipe jeans.
Look for minimal fading,
and a shoe color that complements all of these styles.
If you want to balance fuller hips or thighs,
opt for boot cuts, tailored wide legs,
relaxed straight legs, avoid tiny front pockets,
heavy whiskering, placed across your widest area.
Now, for those of you who want more curves,
choose patch pocket jeans, refined barrel legs,
wide legs with a fitted waist,
or jeans with higher well-positioned pockets.
Strategic pockets and curved outer seams
can create more dimension
without requiring a skin-tight fit,
previously seen with a skinny jean.
Now, if you're petite, choose stovepipe jeans,
straight legs, cropped kick flares,
subtle boot cuts, and properly hemmed full-length styles.
And do not assume that every crop is petite-friendly.
If you want your butt to look more lifted,
look for back pockets that are positioned relatively high,
centered rather than wide-set,
slightly angled, and proportionate to your body.
The strongest denim updates for 2026
are exactly the ones we talked about with this video.
Pick and choose which ones you feel like
are most attuned to you and your style.
By no means do you feel like you need to grab
and take every single one of these and make them happen.
The natural fits and the most confident fashionistas
around the world are the ones that do things
that feel right to them
and that they're most comfortable with.
