The strangest ancient structures are often the ones that look carefully engineered yet strangely impractical. Their builders mastered weight, geometry, stone and space, but used that knowledge to create chambers barely large enough to enter, stairways leading nowhere, oversized foundations, inaccessible openings and layouts that seem to contradict the simplest way of building. In several places, these designs appear once and are never repeated, leaving no clear architectural tradition behind them. The surviving walls reveal how precisely they were constructed, while offering remarkably little evidence of why anyone chose such unusual forms in the first place.
