"I Built a Nano Ecosystem for Cherry Shrimp (No Filter, Low Tech)
Built an low-tech shrimp bowl in a large, wide-bottom vase—and the results are stunning.
This 10-inch wide, 8-inch tall bowl was designed to be simple, natural, and self-sustaining. I started with a nutrient-rich aquasoil base, enhanced with supplements, and added scrapings from a bacter ball to kickstart a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria. To lock in nutrients for strong root growth, I capped it off with a layer of sand.
For the hardscape, I used elephant skin stone and spiderwood to create a natural, forest-like layout, followed by subtle detailing with river gravel to bring everything together.
After filling the bowl, I let it sit for a day to allow tannins from the wood to leach out. The next day, I drained and began planting."
