
6 Lost Cities Hidden by the Jungle for Thousands of Years

This is an educational episode about how airborne laser scanning technology has transformed archaeology in tropical regions. I have compiled six case studies where, beneath dense forest canopies, researchers discovered not just isolated ruins but entire planned cities featuring streets, transportation networks, and water management systems. All information in this video is based on published scientific studies and expedition data, rather than anecdotal legends.
Below are the sources used to develop the script:
Tikal, Guatemala. Results from the PACUNAM LiDAR Initiative, published in the journal *Science* in 2018. Authors include Marcello Canuto, Francisco Estrada-Belli, Thomas Garrison, Luke Auld-Thomas, and colleagues. The survey covered over 2,100 km² and documented more than 61,000 structures.
Mahendraparvata, Cambodia. A research paper published in the journal *Antiquity* in 2019. The lead author was Jean-Baptiste Chevance of the Archaeology and Development Foundation, with co-author Damian Evans of the École française d’Extrême-Orient. The initial scan of the Phnom Kulen plateau was conducted in 2012 with support from the European Research Council.
Valeriana, Campeche State, Mexico. A 2024 study by Luke Auld-Thomas, Marcello Canuto, and colleagues published in *Antiquity*. The research utilized LiDAR data collected in 2013, originally gathered to monitor carbon stocks for environmental studies. Participating institutions included Tulane University, Northern Arizona University, and Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History.
Mosquitia, Honduras. A 2012 survey organized by Steve Elkins, involving the University of Houston. The 2015 ground expedition was scientifically led by Chris Fisher of Colorado State University and covered by National Geographic. Reports by National Geographic and a 2017 book by Douglas Preston confirmed that expedition members contracted leishmaniasis and received treatment at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Upano Valley, Ecuador. A research paper by Stéphen Rostain, Antoine Dorison, and colleagues was published in *Science* in January 2024. The 2015 LiDAR survey was funded by Ecuador's National Institute of Cultural Heritage. Rostain has conducted excavations in the valley for approximately 30 years.
Cotoca and the Casarabe culture, Bolivia. A 2022 research paper by Heiko Prümers, Carla Jaimes Betancourt, José Iriarte, and colleagues was published in *Nature*. The work was carried out by the German Archaeological Institute in collaboration with the University of Bonn and the University of Exeter.
It is also important to clearly distinguish between hard data and estimates.
Data: the number of recorded structures, the surveyed area, radiocarbon-dated chronologies, and structure heights. These are measurements that have been recorded and published.
Estimates: population size. The figures of 7–11 million people for the Maya Lowlands and 30,000–50,000 for Valeriana are derived from computational models, not census data.
Hypotheses: the reasons why settlements were abandoned. Regarding the Upano Valley, volcanic activity remains just one hypothesis, lacking direct evidence. Furthermore, most archaeologists disagree with equating the Mosquitia discovery with the legendary "White City"—a point I clarify in the video.
This is often where opinions diverge. One side argues that there is nothing truly surprising here—simply that we previously lacked the appropriate technology. The other side believes the real issue is not technology, but the ingrained notion that large cities could not exist in tropical regions.
