Story Behind the Cow Tail

Around the same time that Charleston was spreading across dance floors in the 1920s, another vibrant African American social dance was rising in popularity: the Black Bottom.

The Black Bottom emerged in the early 1900s, likely in New Orleans or Georgia, and may have been influenced by an earlier dance known as the Echo. Like Charleston, it grew out of African American social dance traditions and eventually found its way onto stages, into theatres, and later into film.

The dance became widely known through Perry Bradford's hit song The Original Black Bottom Dance, whose sheet music included instructions for performing the dance. Bradford reportedly encountered the Black Bottom in Jacksonville, where it was already being danced by African American communities throughout the Deep South.

Like Charleston and many other authentic jazz dances, the Black Bottom is rooted in African movement traditions. These dances evolved through social dancing, live music, improvisation, and community, constantly changing depending on who danced them, where they were danced, and how they were later adapted for stage and screen.
