A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Flores island on August 15, triggering a tsunami warning and sending residents fleeing to higher ground.
The earthquake struck offshore near Nagekeo in East Nusa Tenggara, with strong shaking reported across Flores. Residents in Sikka described waking up and running outside as the ground shook.
Tsunami waves were subsequently recorded at several locations, including 0.94 metres at Maurole in Ende and 0.38 metres at Kewapante in Sikka. The tsunami warning was later lifted.
At least two people were reported killed, while buildings and homes were damaged and emergency teams began assessing the situation.
