Patrizia Gioia: The ancient art of Fresco

Years of study and work with the fresco technique are exceptionally represented in the documentary "Patrizia Gioia: The Ancient Art of Buon Fresco," co-produced with director and filmmaker Lorenzo Vella. In the film, the author has tried to capture the atmosphere, feelings, and passion that this fascinating technique inspires in those who practice it and those who admire it, in order to showcase this ancient pictorial art form, now taught and practiced by few.
The technique of fresco painting uses simple, natural materials and has remained unchanged over the centuries. The documentary, which is actually a full film production, combines past and present through images of the creation of a fresco on a stone wall, showing the entire production process as it might have been carried out in the second half of the fourteenth century, followed by images from a fresco workshop today.
The documentary presents the "buon fresco" technique in an unusual and engaging way, while a narrator explains the various stages of the process.
The footage was filmed throughout the mural fresco process over 11 days, using optimal natural lighting conditions.
This is not a tutorial, but a real film that tells the complete story of the long fresco-making process—a dedication to the world of fresco painting and a documentary on the fresco technique in a medieval setting that also provides educational insights.
The documentary was presented during the Salone del Restauro 2016 in Ferrara, from April 6th to 8th.
