The Georgia Traverse: Crossing Georgia’s Wild Backcountry | 4Runner Overland Adventure

The Georgia Traverse is one of the most iconic overland routes in the southeastern United States. Stretching nearly 390 miles across northern Georgia, the route connects mountain passes, forest service roads, river crossings, and remote backcountry trails from the South Carolina border to Alabama.
In this expedition, I set out to explore the full route in my 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road, navigating through the rugged terrain of the Chattahoochee National Forest, crossing remote mountain ridges, and camping deep in Georgia’s wilderness.
The Georgia Traverse offers a unique mix of Appalachian mountain landscapes, red clay forest roads, technical sections, and quiet backcountry campsites. It’s a route that rewards preparation, patience, and a spirit of exploration.
This video documents the journey — the terrain, the solitude, and the experience of traveling across Georgia almost entirely on dirt roads.
