Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70

Composed in the summer of 1890 and revised between 1891 and 1892, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's String Sextet in D minor, Op. 70, "Souvenir de Florence," is the composer's last chamber work and one of his most generously scored and symphonically conceived. Written for two violins, two violas, and two cellos, the sextet unfolds in four movements that move from stormy, high spirited drama to tender lyricism and finally to a vigorous finale with a strong folk character. The opening Allegro con spirito sets a lean, Classical sounding theme against a lyrical second subject, both treated with energetic string figuration and rich textures in six parts. The Adagio cantabile e con moto in D major offers a radiant, singing violin melody floating over pizzicato and hushed accompaniment, swelling into an impassioned middle section in unison. The Allegretto moderato begins quietly and ominously, gradually brightening while keeping a restless rhythmic drive, and the finale, Allegro con brio e vivace, brings Russian themes, exuberant rhythms, and brilliant fugal writing that create the atmosphere of a joyous celebration. Although inspired by Florence's sunlit atmosphere, the music is more Russian than Italian in character, combining Tchaikovsky's hallmark lyricism with robust rhythmic energy and darkly shaded pathos. Its symphonic scope, memorable themes, and sumptuous string sound have made "Souvenir de Florence" a cornerstone of the chamber repertoire, admired for the way it transforms six string players into a miniature orchestra of vivid contrasts and sustained song.
