
Why The Silence From Space Proves Nothing About Aliens

Have we really searched the galaxy for alien life — or have we barely looked at all?
For more than 60 years, humanity has listened for signals from other civilizations. Radio telescopes have scanned the sky, SETI has searched for artificial signals, and astronomers have found thousands of planets around other stars. Yet the sky remains silent.
But that silence may not mean what most people think.
Compared to the true search space of the Milky Way, our search for extraterrestrial life is shockingly tiny — like putting a coin on a table and calling that table the entire galaxy. We have searched only a small local bubble of stars, listened for only a tiny slice of time, and scanned only a fraction of the possible frequencies, directions, signal types, and technologies another civilization might use.
The ingredients for life are common: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, water, organic molecules, and energy sources are scattered across the universe. Life appeared on Earth almost as soon as conditions allowed it. Planets are now known to be the rule, not the exception, with hundreds of billions likely in the Milky Way alone.
So why haven’t we found anyone?
