Cone and Ball Deluxe by Ignacio Lopez. 20 Years of a Trick I Can't Let Go
This one's a bit different.
More than twenty years ago I picked up the Dai Vernon Book of Magic, and on the front was the cone and ball. Everything else on that cover I recognised. This thing I didn't. How do you do magic with that? That question never quite left me, and it's been circling back round ever since.
People have told me over the years that it doesn't mean anything, that it's a prop with no logic to it, and I went through a spell of agreeing with them. It didn't help. I kept coming back.
So this is an unboxing of Ignacio Lopez's Cone and Ball Deluxe, but it's really a video about a trick I've never been able to shake. There's footage in here of me practising this twenty years ago, flashing constantly, taping my fingers together for a day just to stop it happening. There's the Fred Kaps documentary that made me realise how beautiful it could look. Bobby May, Tom Stone's work in Vortex, the various cones I bought over the years that did the job but weren't quite it.
And then Ignacio's, which is the thing I was looking for back then and couldn't find. Handcrafted leather cone, wooden box, three balls, a proper fabric bag that isn't going to fall apart in two years, a handkerchief, and the video download with Vernon's original routine plus Ignacio's own.
A beautiful prop doesn't make you better at anything. I know that. But when you've spent that many years thinking about something, having it made properly by someone who clearly loves it too actually matters.
I haven't performed this in a couple of years. My commitment, on camera so I can't wriggle out of it, is that it's going back on stage. Which terrifies me.
