India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq
Rehman in Dhaka today. The meeting comes a day after the Indian envoy held talks with Bangladesh
Foreign Minister Khalilur Rehman. The Bangladesh Foreign Minister was also present at today's
meeting. The Indian envoy will now travel to Delhi for consultations after this meeting.
Prior to the meeting, the Indian envoy said that New Delhi respects Prime Minister Rehman.
He also hailed the Bangladeshi Prime Minister as a people's person.
Trivedi expressed optimism regarding the constructive dialogue between both nations.
The envoy said that he is confident that a solution is bound to come when people are together.
Last week, ex-Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's virtual address regarding her return to
Bangladesh triggered strong objections from Dhaka. Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry strongly
condemned the statement, saying the incident could complicate efforts to restore bilateral
ties between New Delhi and Dhaka. On the other hand, India's External Affairs Ministry responded
by stating that they had no involvement in Hasina's media event, while adding that they
do not endorse the former Prime Minister's remarks. The latest development comes after
India sent an invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rehman to attend the BRICS Summit
in September. However, Dhaka has yet to formally announce its decision regarding its participation.
On 5 August, Dhaka issued a strongly voted statement, saying it is outraged by that
development. But we know that the meeting comes even as India has extended an invite to
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tariq Rehman to visit India for the BRICS Summit
as the chair of the BIMS check. Also, we know that Bangladesh has requested for more diesel
supply from India. So, of course, there are engagements happening. Yes, there are thorny
issues. But clearly, today's meeting will go a long way in terms of soothing out the issues
and finding solutions to any problem and continue with the ongoing reset.
