"The Stars and Stripes Forever" is an American patriotic march composed by John Philip Sousa in 1896. Recognized as Sousa's most famous composition, it was officially designated as the National March of the United States of America by an Act of Congress in 1987. The piece is a staple of Fourth of July celebrations and parades, renowned for its rousing tempo and iconic piccolo obbligato.
Sousa composed the march in his head on Christmas Day, 1896, while aboard the SS Teutonic returning from a European vacation. He had just learned of the sudden death of his band manager, David Blakely. Upon arriving in the United States, he immediately transcribed the notes. The march premiered at the Philadelphia Academy of Music on May 14, 1897, where it was met with immediate enthusiasm. Sousa intended the three themes of the final trio to represent the North (broad melody), the South (piccolo obbligato), and the West (trombone countermelody), uniting in a climax that symbolizes the Union.
