In this practical exercise, I am going to show you how to capture a Renaissance-style still life using just one light. We are stripping away the complex gear so you can understand exactly how light behaves.
The One-Light Setup - I built this entire shot using a single light source, some mirrored card, and basic silver foil to bounce the light back into the shadows.
When you restrict yourself to one light, you are forced to understand distance, direction, and how light grazes off a subject to carve out texture. This knowledge becomes instinct, changing how you approach every photograph you take.
Sourcing and Composition - This setup is not just about the lighting. It is about slowing down and making deliberate, intentional choices.
I will walk you through how I sourced inexpensive props - like a £3 secondhand tablecloth and sea-salvaged bottles - to build a compelling composition. You will see how leading lines and object placement naturally hold the viewer's attention.
