Tchaikovsky composed his First Piano Concerto in late 1874 and completed in 1875 out of a fierce ambition to prove that Russian composers could write world-class virtuosic music. Working as a young professor at the Moscow Conservatory, he drafted the massive piece in just a few weeks. He specifically tailored the music for his close friend, Nikolai Rubinstein, who was one of Russia's top pianists, fully intending to dedicate the masterpiece to him.

However, when Tchaikovsky proudly played the draft for Rubinstein on Christmas Eve, the pianist responded harshly and criticized the concerto unplayable and poorly composed, demanding that Tchaikovsky completely rewrite it. Deeply insulted but defiant, Tchaikovsky refused to alter a single note, erased Rubinstein's dedication, and sent the score to German pianist Hand von Bülow, who triumphantly premiered the piece in Boston to historic success.
