Originating in Qianxi Village (present-day Deqing, Zhejiang) during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it was created by General Shen Chong. Initially a folk dance, it was later promoted by aristocratic families and entered the imperial court, becoming a widely popular dance in the Jiangnan region.

Artistic Characteristics

Style: Lingering and gentle, with beautiful and moving vocals and movements, characteristic of Jiangnan folk dances.

Body Movements: Includes movements such as leaning forward with the hips raised and leaning back with hip thrusts, using the hips to drive the body and express emotions such as longing and sorrow.

Costumes: Dancers often wear white linen clothing, similar to the costumes in the *White Linen Dance*.

Historical Impact

Even during the Tang Dynasty, it was still classified as a soft dance within the "Qing Shang Yue" (a type of traditional Chinese music). The Tang Dynasty poet Cui Hao praised it, saying "I love the wonder of the Qianxi dance," and Liu Shan of the Chen Dynasty also wrote the line "Dancing by the pond at Qianxi."

Its reputation as "dance originating from Qianxi" reflects one of the origins of Han Chinese song and dance, and it remains an important case study in dance history.
