Beneath the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London, six metres below modern street level, lie the stone remains of a Roman amphitheatre that seated six thousand spectators nearly two thousand years ago. Lost for centuries, searched for by Victorian archaeologists, it was finally discovered in February 1988 by workmen preparing the site for a new art gallery. This is the story of the arena that roared beneath one of the most famous financial districts on earth, and the city that forgot it was there.
