Senator Ted Cruz held a Senate hearing to address the perceived threat of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S., labeling it a \"clear and present danger.\" Witnesses testified that the group uses front organizations to infiltrate American institutions and promote an ideology aimed at overthrowing governments to establish a global caliphate. Democrats boycotted the hearing, calling it political scapegoating.
Senator Ted Cruz taking a closer look at the Muslim Brotherhood here in America.
He says the group is a clear and present danger to the safety and the security of Americans.
NTD's Jason Perry has the details.
The Muslim Brotherhood spawned Hamas, influenced the ideology of Al Qaeda,
and gave rise to multiple terrorist organizations.
Senator Ted Cruz holding a Senate hearing on the Muslim Brotherhood,
and he shows a chart of what he calls the Muslim Brotherhood network here in the United States.
They functioned as part of a broader Muslim Brotherhood ecosystem.
When one organization collapses, another quickly emerges, often led by many of the same individuals.
One of the witnesses, Laura Burns, is a retired FBI special agent.
She says the FBI wiretapped a meeting of leaders of the Palestine Committee,
which was linked to the Muslim Brotherhood,
and they said they wanted to infiltrate universities, media, and politics in the United States.
They also noted their intent to cleanse the curriculum in U.S.-based K-12 schools because,
quote, we don't want our children growing up surrendering to the idea of peace with Jews.
Their words.
Another witness, Kyle Scheidler, is a senior analyst for Homeland Security
and Counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy.
He's adding this.
Founded in Egypt by Hassan al-Banna in 1928, from its very beginning,
the Muslim Brotherhood has operated as a clandestine organization,
which engages in the creation of public front groups, cultivates agents of influence,
all in pursuit of their ultimate goal, the overthrow of governments
and the reestablishment of a worldwide caliphate operating under Islamic law.
Democrats on the subcommittee did not attend the hearing.
In a statement, they labeled the hearing as Republicans
scapegoating Muslims to, quote, whip up their voters.
An oversight hearing that one of the two major parties refuses even to see
is exactly the outcome these organizations that we're discussing have spent 40 years
working to produce.
And Cruz says he hopes to see real action from the federal government
to protect Americans from what he believes
is a clear and present danger to their safety and security.
