The World’s Most Famous Painting, Part 2 🐫 | Along the River During the Qingming Festival
We’re back inside 張擇端’s “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” (清明上河圖) — and this time, the painting gets political. In Part 2, we cross the bridge into the crossroads outside the city, past a sleeping soldier, a foreign camel caravan that strolls through the gate unchecked, and a masked spy lurking by the riverbank. Then we step through the gates of Bianjing itself, the most prosperous city in the world at the time, where a humble inn and a mysterious clinic hold the real key to what Zhang Zeduan was trying to tell the emperor.
We’ll unpack:
🏯 Why the painting’s “clean government” checkpoints are all falling apart
🐪 What those camels are really doing there
🍶 The tavern-vs-inn symbolism hiding in plain sight
👑 Why the Song, Ming, and Qing versions of this painting are all telling different stories
📖 Where to see the real thing (and how to read it in Chinese)
