In this scene from the 2015 cult hit Dope, the local dealer Dom (played by A$AP Rocky) intercepts Malcolm (Shameik Moore) outside his house. What starts as a tense encounter quickly turns into an unexpected "favor" that sets the entire plot in motion.
What’s the movie about? In the high-energy crime comedy Dope, Malcolm is a 90s-obsessed "geek" in a rough Inglewood neighborhood trying to survive his senior year and get into Harvard. His life is flipped upside down after a chance encounter with a local drug dealer leads to him accidentally inheriting a massive stash of MDMA. To save his future, Malcolm and his friends must transform from outcasts into savvy entrepreneurs, using their wit and technology to sell the product while dodging gangs and the police.
A group of students navigating a dangerous neighborhood encounter a local drug dealer named Don. After a tense exchange about 90s hip-hop culture, Don uses a student named Malcolm as a messenger to invite a woman to his birthday party. Despite the risks associated with Dom's reputation, some of the students decide to attend the party to expand their horizons.
Some really needs to invent an app like ways to avoid all these hood traps.
The only way to get home is down 104th street but that's where the dope dealers are
who for sport routinely try to steal their bikes.
Such is the life of a geek in the bottles. A daily navigation between bad and worse choices.
Yo man, I be seeing you and your little friends with y'all laptops and MC Hammer pants
riding around and looking like y'all came out of the DeLorean or some s**t.
What the f**k is up with that s**t anyway? The 90s, it's like the golden age of hip-hop.
Everything from Takes a Nation of Millions to The Blueprint was killing it.
Guess me and my friends just wish we grew up back then. It Takes a Nation came out in 88.
Blueprint came out in 2001. What the f**k are you talking about right now?
Technically. But you know, the spirit of the music was definitely still 90s. I mean,
Takes a Nation, Straight Outta Compton, Peyton Fools ahead of their time.
Then you got Snoop, Biggie, Wu-Tang. They took the game to the next level.
Blueprint was kind of like the punctuation mark.
Let's not forget, the 90s also gave us Vanilla Ice,
MC Hammer, and we can't forget about the Fresh Prince.
Everything in the 90s wasn't great, but s**t. You gotta admit, Summertime was a classic.
What's your name, little n***a?
It's Malcolm.
Look here, Malcolm. I want you to do a favor. You see that green apartment there in the middle
of the block? It's a nice little piece over there. I want you to go up to it and tell her that Don
wants to talk to her. That's it?
Yeah, f**k. Can you handle that?
Yeah. Get the pedal in, n***a.
When you say something, you should stare at me.
Don says that he would like you to come over and talk to him.
Well, why don't you tell Don that if he wants to talk to me,
he can come over here and be a ******* man and not send a little kid to talk to him.
Tell him just like that.
She said that s**t, and that Dominique was way cooler before he became Dom,
and that if you think that she cares about your dope money, she doesn't.
Listen, tell her that I'm throwing a birthday party at first tonight,
and I would really enjoy the pleasure of her company.
She went inside out.
Step in the brackets first, and then square this up.
Dom says he's throwing a birthday party tonight at first.
Said he'd really love the pleasure of your company.
That s**t did not say that.
He did. I swear.
Lord.
Well, I'll go if you go.
I think we dance.
We're going. We are going.
She metaphorically showed you her b**thead becoming a s**thead.
Um, this is Dom we're talking about.
We're not going to a drug dealer's birthday party.
This is tripping.
We're in our senior year, Richard, okay?
It is time we started extending our horizons.
Call your mom and tell her you're studying late at my place.
Come on, dude.
