The Seasons are a suite of piano pieces composed by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between November
1875 and May 1876 at the request of the publisher of Le Nouvelliste, a monthly music magazine in
St Petersburg. This magazine published scores as a supplement to his newspaper, and its director
asked Tchaikovsky to compose a piece each month for the magazine.

Trio Zadig, with actor Stéphane Varupenne, a member of the Comédie-Française, look at Piotr
Tchaikovsky‘s cycle The Seasons. Probably the most popular of the Russian composer‘s works,
with an album sheet for each month of the year. These twelve pieces have much more depth than
one might think, and the fact that they are presented in their totality really gives meaning to their
composition. The poetry, the harmonic subtlety, the rhythmic and choreographic allure create a
diversity that goes beyond the somewhat anecdotal nature of the writing.

Trio Zadig considers this cycle to be one of Tchaikovsky‘s major works. The narrative aspect of the
tale, rendered here by Stéphane Varupenne, is added, with each piece seemingly beginning with
“Once upon a time...“
