What Happens When an Elephant Corridor Is Blocked? | Assam Field Story

Why are elephants no longer afraid of people in Assam tea gardens?
Anthony Tanti shares lived experience from Phulbari Division, Amaribari Tea Garden.
In this Assamese field interview, Anthony explains how repeated contact has changed the way people and elephants behave around each other. He remembers a time in the 1970s when elephants would run away after seeing people. Today, in his experience, elephants often stay closer because they see workers, families, sounds and chasing methods again and again.
He also explains why elephants may return to villages and gardens after finding food once. Rice, flour, bananas, jackfruit and stored food can draw elephants back, especially when forest food becomes harder to find. At the same time, Anthony reminds us that fear exists on both sides: people are afraid for their families, and elephants may also react because they feel threatened.
This video is not about blaming elephants. It is a field-based conversation about human-elephant coexistence in Assam tea garden landscapes.
