AI GeneratedOakley demonstrates naval combat in Napoleon through a friendly 1v1 battle. Using a strategy of quantity over quality, he utilizes one 80-gun ship of the line and several maneuverable coronet frigates to outmaneuver and defeat an opponent who relied on two 74-gun ships.
Hey, what's up guys? It's Oakley, and I'm gonna be playing Napoleon now. We're gonna be doing an online battle
This is kind of a change of pace from what you're used to here. You can see my small French fleet
so this is gonna be a friendly 1v1 on the high seas and
The rules for this basically no rules
I just put it on small funds because large naval battles while
impressive to look at are very very hard to manage just because the angles of fire the various ships how different ships are supposed to
interact and then the different volleys that you
Basically to be most efficient you have to micromanage those
Anyways with the small funds what you'll see is my opponent decides to opt for two of these
74 gun ships of the line whereas I went for one pretty good ship
so that's an 80 gun ship of the line, and then I went for several of these small coronet frigates and
So I decided to go for numbers as opposed to quality although
I did pretty heavily invest in one of my flagships so my opponent kind of has
Two medium ships I have one kind of medium and then three light ships
Also, you can see me getting some shots off there with my unit
I am out of range
But something you can do is you can select your unit and toggle when you fire your broadsides
So that's actually very cool because it means you can actually select when you shoot your shots
If you time it perfectly you can actually hit your opponent at a distance so that first volley
I got off hasn't done any damage, but I think the second one where I'm wheeling about
We'll do a bit more damage so we can watch this from this perspective as they fire the cannons sometimes that's effective sometimes
it's not let's go ahead and
Controls on this are a little gimmicky. Let's go ahead and watch me fire off my shots. Yeah, so right there
I do get off a pretty good broadside against my opponent
He is yep. He lost a gun so you can see those
Shots early on are gonna be pretty important for tipping the scales of the battle because everything
Snowballs from here if you can take out a couple of his guns at a distance that means every other engagement
He's just we firing less at you
Which means you'll probably keep the upper hand in terms of firepower, and that's all these naval battles are
My opponents gonna start doing the same thing however. He doesn't get as great a shot. You saw that I turned up
Sort of upwind we'll call that
In order to avoid getting hit by the majority of shots, and I'm continuing to keep my distance
My main goal was this guy would be the mainstay of my attack
So get off the large volleys and these guys were supposed to be scavengers kind of like a pack of wolves that would follow behind
My opponent so the coronet frigates are pretty highly maneuverable
They have a decent amount of guns for the number of ships. They have
Or the the size ship they are but they don't have very good range
They have to get them up close, and they don't have very good hull strength however
What they do have is the profile of the ship is pretty sleek and small so they don't take as many shots
So I thought that it was a pretty good trade-off
The way naval battles work is a little bit complicated, but it's a lot about timing so being able to strike when your opponent is
Reloading or positioning yourself in order to say shoot for instance at his back because then you can get shots off at him
He can at you so that's what a lot of the naval combat
You know in reality during that time was a lot of wheeling about so initially I started with I deployed as high up
Windside as I could in order to have the advantage of sails
That actually does it is taking into account in this game when you're sailing with the wind you go much faster
Same with turning speeds and radiuses and all that it's all affected by the wind dynamically
So that's something you definitely need to take advantage of
These three ships were gonna slip around behind my opponent
He decided to react by turning his ships about that would have been two versus three of these light ships
So I decided to do an about face and now
My goal is to try and isolate one of these two dudes so seeing as he has turned this side
I'm gonna decide to go straight into the wind with this
My French ship of the line here you saw how he got off a valve a volley that wasn't effective
That's my cue to straight up charge my opponent. I know he fired off his ball
It's gonna be a while for him to reload. That's exactly when you want to charge straight port
So I'm charging into the wind getting a lot of speed getting much much closer
And then I'm gonna turn around just at the last moment and get off my volley
So let's go ahead and watch this up close something about the naval engagements is they're very very epic
Especially with these larger ships. Let's watch this broadside
boom
So getting off some shots at my opponent
That definitely rocked his ship, but didn't do too much damage in terms of damage to his guns
You can see he's still only down to but in terms of the health. I'm starting to chip away at his base hull
Strength and also the details on these ship battles is awesome
You have guys climbing up the the rigging
All sorts of guys walking the decks you can even go below grounds and see the guns fire very very highly detailed
One of the most fun. I think naval engagements ever anyways. Here's my pack of wolves coming in
Something you'll notice on the little icons right here is two green bars
That's the hull strength of either side of your ship
so basically when you're attacking your opponents if one side gets too low you want to turn about and
You want to make sure that the other side now starts absorbing fire because if you just present one side the entire battle you're gonna
Fail much quick much more quickly
Here, I'm splitting this opponent to going up wind one going down wind
This guy is so fast that he can get around behind him and this opponent
You know he can only face off against one of my coordinated frigates
That's the advantage of having so many of these guys is yeah
I'll get off some broad shots against me, but now I have shots off directly at his back and over here and
That did a pretty good amount of damage
But now I'm gonna turn about and now we're gonna get basically I have angles of fire all three at once on my opponent
So some decent shots there
He's gonna try and reform the advantage that he has right now is actually when he can turn like this boom
He shoots at both of my guys
So I'm gonna try and tuck tail and run with that guy and try and hold anchor with him
I'm gonna position here. It's perfect for shooting him in the back
However, these guys are gonna take a lot of fire from the heavily armed guys
It's this guy the CPO my 80 gunship of the line. I really love this guy
He's gonna be doing well to come and clean up, so I'm hoping to isolate him and bring in the big guns quite literally
Another thing you can do for naval naval combat that makes it even more exciting is
When you select your ships you have three types of shot that you can fire so one is a standard cannonball
That you can fire another one is gonna be grape shot
So that's gonna be kind of for close quarter range for clearing decks
It basically it's like shooting a shotgun across the bow, so it's gonna be
basically low range
But high damage and the third one you can do is gonna be chained shot and the idea behind that is you have two cannon
balls that are gonna be sort of forged together attached with the chain and
When that flies around basically you have two balls together attached with the chain the idea is that as it moves through the air
It'll rip through some of the rigging destroy various important lines and also tear up the sails
So in game you can actually use that to slow down your opponent
Get rid of its mobility crush its sails, and it's kind of stuck in the water
And it'll allow you to position yourself behind the ship. That's a pretty high level stuff
You can try and pull off it takes a lot of micro and this one
I was just focused on brute strength of just dealing as much damage
And you can see it is doing a lot of damage in terms of the hull. He's already at orange
But uh yeah, take a look at this
He is doing a lot of firing on both sides of his ship
And he's doing everything you can to do an about-face
However, there are holes in his vessel and now I'm gonna be coming in here with two of my French ships
And I'm turning about to get another fire off
Let's go ahead and see what this looks like from down in the ship
So some good news
Yeah, you see that a broadside looking at the enemy ship
There's my captain on the top right looking out at them so all sorts of wheeling maneuvers my opponent right here
Boom some of these shots are just incredible. I love the aesthetics of this kind of naval combat
I hope it's a period they revisit with the advanced graphics
Now we're gonna be entwined in a duel where I keep spinning about but the combined effect of all my troops firing at once
Brought him down this ship is gonna be taken out so
My strategy seems to be working the increased rate of fire having so many ships
Cycling and firing means I can always get shots off at him, and it was just too much
I just tore up his decks and now once this ship has been taken out you can see he still has 45 cannons left
And 162 men left, but he's effectively neutered so because I have three of these ships even if he takes that one of my ships
I don't have kind of all my eggs in one basket for instance. You know 74 guns for example wouldn't be disabled
It would only be 32, and I would still have 32 on each of these ships. We're still
Viable for for shooting over here. We're gonna continue to get some shots off. Let's go ahead and follow this guy
I would likes locking on to him for some reason all right. We'll go ahead and do that just watch my ships sail about and
Now I'm gonna be circling on getting ready for the kill, and I'm also putting on some shots against this guy although
He is surrendered so he should be done an
Additional wrinkle to these games is you can actually stop your ship at any point in time and tell it to repair
So that's something I could have made use of is for instance when three of my guys engage
I could disengage one of them in repair so for instance this coordinate frigate right here
I could stop him and repair him out of combat and that way
I just make the most efficient use of all my troops
But yeah, this is definitely very epic from the Austrian ship firing in both directions doing everything you can
But yeah that broadside
I just delivered from the front with my coordinate frigate the angle is such that any shot that misses the front of the bow
Is gonna hit the rear?
Boom there goes the shot from my main ship. I love that guy. He's looking so sick
And this guy over there the ocean is gonna prepare for another broadside, but this guy is not going down without a fight
He's able to destroy one of my guys, so he's gonna start routing
I was a little fearful given that this guy was low health as well
I thought he might route, but you know I knew that my main ship of the line here is still ready to go
and he's presenting a
Not the best thing in my opinion to do is presenting that side to my ship
But he's trying to just tackle my main vessel over there, so I'm gonna reposition this guy
Over here look at this. He's trying to turn to meet my radius
But I'm traveling a bit with the wind to turn here. This is gonna be devastating
This is probably gonna be the last volley delivered from my main ship
Just straight up on my opponent
So let's watch this as it comes right in
boom
So definitely the best
Spectacular explosion that you can see right there and actually some of these ships if you hit the magazine
Storeroom they will actually go ahead and explode in like a radius of this big so those are really cool to see in some of
The larger battles that's gonna be it for that's what this one
I hope to bring you guys more naval engagements. Hopefully have more people in the game
So it's just so much more chaotic and much more epic
This is just a taste of it to interest you guys to the combat of how it works
And hopefully you know test the waters so to speak in terms of what you guys want to see and if you like this
Kind of thing it was I think it went really well and my strategy definitely paid off
But there's all sorts of strategies you can try and do anyways see you guys next time. Thanks
